McSally: Democrats would make DC and Puerto Rico states if they win Senate
By John Bowden - 08/11/20 04:58 PM EDT
Arizona Sen. Martha McSally (R) claimed Tuesday that Senate Democrats would move to pass statehood bills for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico should they retake control of the chamber in November.
In an interview with NBC News, the Republican senator speculated that Democrats would seek to make the nation's capital and Puerto Rico full U.S. states with Senate and House representation, a move she said would permanently prevent Republican control of the Senate.
"If they win the White House, the Senate, the House, they're already saying they're going to ram through the most radical agenda in American history," McSally said.
"There's so much at stake here. They're going to make D.C. and Puerto Rico a state and get four new Democrat Senators. We'd never get the Senate back again. And look, this is just the implications of this seat, the implications of this vote," the senator added.

(90,683 posts)...than are in 3 other states. And they have one non-voting Representative in the House, and a Mayor. They deserve better.
It occurs to me that you mean where would the new state capitol be interesting question! I wonder if the Mayor has any idea?

(53,061 posts)The rest of Washington would be a state under current proposals.
I am against it in any case.
PR voters are split 50 50 on statehood (and have been for a long time) so that issue is moot until there is a significant change in PR opinion.

(54,378 posts)Just shrink the federal area to the area immediately connecting the Capitol, Supreme Court and major departments in the Constitution Ave.-Pennsylvania Ave. area down to the Smithsonian. That can be the new stateless D.C., with ghe White house near the western border, and the rest can be the new State of Columbia. It would already be an ethnically and economically diverse state from the poorer northeast to the fancy northwest, which already boasts 3 major universities. Official languages would already need to include English, Spanish, Ibo, Amharic, Créole and Ashanti, if the taxi drivers are any indication.

(52,224 posts)rather than change their philosophy to appeal to more people, they seek to deny representation to the people.
if everyone in america 18 or over who was ever a citizen was allowed to vote and get voting representation in congress, republicans would be absolutely demolished.

(10,136 posts)maybe, just maybe, the Republican party can try to behave as if it represents the people of Puerto Rico and DC (and the rest of the country for that matter). Act like you're there for them and they just might vote for you!

(14,904 posts)They are citizens of the United States. They bear the full responsibilities of citizenship. They deserve the full rights of citizenship. Most, if not many, are open minded to political discourse. They might vote Republican if that party advanced good policies or good candidates for office. Been a long time sine Eisenhower and Milliken, though.
