'This is unstoppable': America's midwest braces itself for a Covid-19 surge

Three months ago, the Republican governor of Missouri chose not to wear a mask in a shop, because he said he wasn’t going to let the government tell him what to do. Mike Parson visited a hardware store to celebrate its reopening after he lifted Missouri’s coronavirus lockdown over the objections of health professionals and mayors of major cities.

Parson said the worst of the pandemic was past and the economic impact of the shutdown was worse than the virus. As for masks, the governor dismissively claimed “there was a lot of information on both sides” over whether to wear one so he wasn’t going to require people to do so.

Three months later, Covid-19 is surging in Missouri and in many other parts of the midwest that imagined they had escaped the worst of the pandemic.

Health specialists predict a sharp increase in deaths across the region in the coming weeks that will be made significantly worse in some states by the politicians who followed Donald Trump’s lead in undermining medical advice and in questioning the value of masks.

Alarmed by rising infections, Wisconsin’s governor last week declared a public health emergency and required masks to be worn indoors. But that immediately fell victim to the politics of coronavirus as at least 16 county sheriffs said they would not enforce the order.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office told residents: “Wear a mask if you want, if you don’t want to, that is fine also”. In Oneida county, the sheriff said the governor’s order “is in violation of the constitution” while the sheriff of Racine county called the order “government overreach”.

The University of Washington’s Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation has warned that the refusal of Iowa’s governor, Kim Reynolds, to require masks in public spaces will cost 700 additional lives over the next three months. It predicted the number of coronavirus deaths at about 13 a day in Iowa by the end of October with the present policy compared to fewer than two if 95% of people used face coverings.

In Kansas, the Republican-controlled legislature tied governor Laura Kelly’s hands by preventing her from limiting the numbers of people in bars and restaurants or closing businesses until mid-September even as coronavirus cases increase. Republicans said there was no need for Kelly to have those powers because there would not be a second wave until after September.

Oh, it was eminently stoppable, folks. It's just that some people in influential positions preferred to indulge in pointless disputes about simple countermeasures. Then they utterly wasted the initial herculean effort by the American people by doing a whole lot of nothing. As surely as night follows day, the failure to follow the guidelines results in more infections, more hospitalizations, and more deaths, and Gov. Parson defends his indolence with "there was a lot of information on both sides." Because he had no obligation at all to see whose information was grounded in science and public health epidemiology and whose information was so much nonsense. Who could tell?!

business closings job losses, foreclosures, food insecurity (! thanks Reagan) all can be placed at the feet of tRump and his "advisors" who ignored the warnings. SOMEONE should have stepped up and said something about the PDB's being ignored. This entire disaster is their fault. They can call it the China virus all they want to, the warnings came and were ignored. This is the tRumpandemic. Thousands of lives lost, other lives ruined. All their fault. Anyone in a private sector job who caused even a fraction of this disaster would have been fired, no good references, just shoved out the door. Government employees can total screw up millions of lives, and it is glossed over. We need to know the name of EVERYONE who knew this pandemic was coming, and said nothing. Charges should be filed. At the very least, charged with derelection of duty. tRump needs to have this total disaster hung around his fat neck for the rest of his miserable life.

We will no doubt see a preventable tragedy after this huge biker's rally in SD. The crush of people, no preventative measures, and then bikers going back home carrying the virus to family and friends. And, of course, a Trumper Governor who values Freedumb over life and limb.

Sun Aug 9, 2020, 02:18 PM

Columbia U School of Medicine has posted last spring's virology course online and I've been kicking and clawing through it since virology in the days before HIV wasn't covered very thoroughly in my then excellent micro course.

The professor stated around class 5 or 6 that coronavirus would likely follow the SARS Cov1 pattern and be gone by the beginning of summer. I think that view was likely prevalent then but as the infectiousness of this thing became known, experts revised their opinions.

The problem is that Dumdum and his acolytes didn't keep up. Dumdum is incapable of it and his acolytes trusted him to have the latest information and with Dumdum contradicting Dr. Fauci at every opportunity, the stage was set for an horrific epidemic.

The problem is really the old religion vs. science tension. Religion is kept static, the texts remain the same even if the misinterpretations vary. Science can change hourly as data come in and clarify the original picture. People who rely on the former are simply not going to be able to cope with the latter and are going to feel lied to every single time.

That is what we're up against here and why those folks are so defiant about not doing anything to protect themselves or others. They're pissed off when information comes in and changes things and think science lies to them.

This is as good a theory as any. They're not all hateful, they just can't handle mixed messages. Dumdum shoots from the lip and then doubles down on his lies. To them, that's telling the truth because he refuses to change.

I'm prepared to wear a mask and observe other safeguards for the rest of my life. I am planning to be alive in Nov (or Oct) to cast my vote. At least I hope to avoid dying from Covid-19.

Some of the stupid people who have literally and figuratively chosen this hill to die on will not be here in Nov. to vote. They will not be here in future to fall in line with bad policies. They are causing harm and injury right now, and innocents are paying for their bully rush to death. I wish it wasn't like that, and I mourn the loss of grandparents who bake cookies and play with their grand kids, pass along lore, share the stories of people in our family. I mourn the loss of younger people who fought in the front lines, who tried to make a difference. I mourn for the people who will be impaired until they die, because even though they used the guidelines, some putz infected them with Covid-19. Just do what you need to do to stay safe. I know what I do, and I know not everyone is going to do everything I do. But I know if I do it for myself, I am doing all I can to avoid getting sick or making someone sick.

And in most rural areas in Texas Oklahoma Kansas and Idaho... and to a lesser extent Utah and Oregon.... wearing a mask drew attention to you. I often felt the look of scorn on the faces of the dumb fuckers.

An old friend took me into his favorite hangout where he shoots pool... and there were about 30 patrons, no one wearing a mask. In fact if they came in wearing a mask they immediately took it off.

This is what we're dealing with, and this is why we are failing miserably.
