Sorry for the pessimism, but now that the moratorium on evictions and foreclosures has expired and the federal government is bickering over the next pandemic stimulus bill that could expand unemployment benefits and prevent millions from sliding into poverty after their jobs have evaporated, homelessness and hunger will reach levels in the United States that havent been seen since the 1930s.

Well, take a look at whats already happened in Memphis, Tennessee as revealed in a video by the folks at TNHoller.
The video shows an eviction in progress, the sudden and unannounced eviction of Leslie Nelson, a 56-year-old woman who was just released from the hospital and is still suffering from the lingering effects of a COVID-19 infection.
The reason for the eviction? A lawyer representing those owed medical debts by the late mother of the womans also deceased partner had gone to court to order the home seized and sold to pay those debts, claiming that the house was abandoned while the woman was being treated for her coronavirus in a local hospital.
As police and sheriffs galore pile her belongings on the front lawn, Hunter Dempster, a friend of the woman, live streams the scene on Facebook, interviews the distraught woman about the reasons for her plight, and confronts the police for executing an eviction that the county health department has declared is illegal because of the womans COVID-positivity status.

(12,712 posts)You know how, when a thunderstorm is coming and you can hear the faint rumbles in the distance? Then, in a while the thunder and lightening is right over head.
That's how this will go. Stories like this will thunder and boom loudly across the land.
Going homeless, (especially for the first time) can plunge a person into a frightful, confused survival mode fraught with fear and worry and uncertainty and even cause or exacerbate mental illness. That is can be a major trauma for young and old individuals and catastrophic for children. It is about to be a way of life for many and the odds of getting housed again, (ever) is statistically against you. It is also very detrimental to our communities, cities, etc. We all pay a price for it eventually.
Meanwhile, Ben CarTrumpSon is doing his job well: gutting HUD as quickly as he can prior to the onslaught of housing issues to come. That would be an agency that should be on the forefront of dealing with this kind of crisis. Cutting he budget for HUD is the game plan. That's not going to go well.

(17,937 posts)I've been wondering from the start....who's going to pay for all this medical care? Bankruptcies both of individuals, companies and non-profit health care operations will boggle our minds.
