Port authorities claimed the cargo, offloaded from ship TRUMP D, named after the U.S. president, is safe because it is in big bags just like those in Beirut.

An American-owned cargo ship named after the president of the United States docked in a Ukrainian port has just offloaded 10,000 metric tons of the same chemical substance that nearly leveled the city of Beirut this week, according to the Liveuamap news source. The hangar in Lebanon only had 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate, which caused catastrophic damage to the Lebanese capital.

The ship docked in Ukraine, which was previously named Seabreeze before a Florida company registered as Pilin Fleet Management LLC purchased it in 2018, and renamed it Trump D, was registered by Marine Traffic tracking website in the Yuzhi port near Odessa on Friday.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has now ordered relevant checks on the storage condition of the substance, which is primarily used for agricultural fertilizer or high-powered explosives after port officials claimed it was safely stored in big bags.
Photos online suggest that the ammonium-nitrate powder was also stored in similar big bags in the port of Beirut when it detonated, likely sparked by a nearby fire Tuesday afternoon.

(47,551 posts)I thought is was someone be snarky. Can't believe someone actually named a cargo ship after the man. If that's not tempting fate, I don't know what is. Then the fact that the ship was carrying ammonium nitrate made it read like The Onion. Trump and his supporters have effectively killed satire.

(47,551 posts)He'll never get a battleship named after him, instead he gets a fertilizer hauling cargo ship! Pretty appropriate.

(54,420 posts)We sailed on the ship Trump D
My grandfather and me
Around the Black Sea ports we did roam
Booze in a cup
Trying not to blow up
I fear in one piece I might not come home
So, grab enough for my bail
This is as bad as it gets
Get my ass to shore and let me fly home
That ship is a bomb
I want to see Mom
When that thing blows up
I wanna be home!

It may have practically written itself, but it is still pretty impressive. You must think in verse!

(54,420 posts)The videos were done by a brilliant videographer called Don Caron. His "Parody Project" has done about 50 videos. We have collaborated on 10 or 12 of them. He did the audio on Mar-a-Lagoville and Act Naturally, too. The others were recorded by my "The Freedom Toast" project in Atlanta. I sometimes play on the songs, but only when I happen to be in Atlanta during recording sessions. Otherwise, I just write the lyrics and direct from afar, since I live in Germany.

It must be surreal watching what all is happening here from so far away. Have you been in Germany long?

Those last two were both guest-written by my brother, by the way! He still lives in the States.

(18,724 posts)Ammonium nitrate has been widely used since at least WW2 as a fertilizer and the base for industrial explosives.
Large quantities have been moved by ships for a very long time. The original buyer of the shipment that became stranded in Beirut considered the 2700 tons to be a small order.

(3,256 posts)In Minnesotathere is a huge distribtion center on the Mississippi south of Minneapolis where fertilizers are brought up the Mississipi by barge. Ammonium nitrate is safe as long as there is no big fire. It only becomes explosive at high temperatures. It seems in Beirut it was stored alongside fireworks.

This could have Putin's fingerprints on it. Also in the region, in 2018 Russian boats intercepted three Ukrainian ships in the Kerch straight and closed access to the Sea of Azov where there are other Ukrainian ports. The ship that unloaded the ammonium nitrate in Beirut was owned by a Russian businessman and captained by a Russian who says he warned Putin regularly that it was a powder keg.
Ukraine was known as the breadbasket of the Soviet Union for its fertile fields of wheat (implying the need for fertilizer).

(5,857 posts)today who was talking with an expert in this stuff, and apparently the material in Beirut would no longer be allowed in international shipping channels as an agricultural product, but would be considered weapons grade.
I have no idea what the stuff is in Ukraine, but there are are different types with different amounts of nitrogen.

I don't think there is anything to this story, except a weirdly named ship carrying an extremely common cargo.

(23,362 posts)It's not flying the U.S. flag, but the flag of Saint Kitts & Nevis. So, is it "American-owned"?
I guess it's no different than a U.S. citizen touring Europe with a Canadian flag on his backpack.
