Doctor tells Nicolle Wallace why the worst is yet to come and it scared the bejesus out of the MSNBC anchorhttps://www.rawstory.com/2020/08/doctor-tells-nicolle-wallace-why-the-worst-is-yet-to-come-and-it-scared-the-bejesus-out-of-the-msnbc-anchor/
Speaking to MSNBCs Nicolle Wallace on Friday, two foreign policy experts explained the shocking ways in which President Donald Trump has ignored the continued attacks on the American election at the hands of Russia. Trump has spoken to Vladimir Putin five or six times since it was discovered that Moscow was paying bounties for the deaths of Americans. He didnt address any of it; he confessed because he believes the report was a hoax.
But when Wallace turned to the doctor on her panel to ask about the next steps of the coronavirus, things looked even worse.

President Trump is in a dilapidated political state because of his inactions and failures to lead the country through a global pandemic, Wallace began. You said, we would stop being America if things got much worse you said a few weeks ago. You first raised my attention to the disinformation being spread around the pandemic and vaccines. What strikes you about this intel report that Russia is now actively working to hurt Biden to help Trump with the specter of disinformation spread around the pandemic and vaccines. Facebook and Twitter both took down some of Trumps disinformation as it pertained to infection risks for children. Its probably like whack-a-mole if you had to pull it all down.
Yes, theres a number of things, well call this chaotic Friday, were projecting a lot of chaos across the country as we head into the fall, said Dr. Peter Hotez, the director of Texas Childrens Hospital Center for Vaccine Development. Look, were at the U.S. right now, leads the world in the number of new cases and deaths over the last seven days, and this has been true for the last few months. So, our epidemic is still spiraling out of control. The new estimates are 300,000 deaths by December and possibly 400,000 deaths by January. To put that number in perspective, thats the number of Americans that died in World War II. Were dealing with something of that magnitude, and still no plan for control at all.

(2,430 posts)Last night we shared some sparkling wine out on the patio with friends we haven't been able to hang out with since the pandemic started in March. We sat 6 feet apart and sipped our wine and caught up a little bit. Now this man and his wife are not religious particularly, certainly not fundies and both are very intelligent. In fact, the man speaks many languages and can tell you something you didn't know about in almost any subject you can think of. He started reading when he three or four and he is a life long learner and is quite brilliant. His wife, from Ukraine, also speaks several languages, is smart and hard-working, not Faux News nuts. So I was shocked to hear the man blaming Fauci for the state of affairs concerning Covid-19. According to him, it was Fauci who told us not to wear masks. Well maybe it was initially, but when Fauci said we need to wear masks, Trump jettisoned him like a piece of trash. When I told him that Trump has always had more power than Fauci to steer Americans' behavior and that he used that power in foolish ways that resulted in the mess we now have with an out of control pandemic. If he had taken responsibility, with as few as 2 sentences, he could have gotten all Americans, including the ones that follow him like loyal cultists, the ones who now are refusing, to mask up so that we can better control the pandemic. But he chose to squander the opportunity and to this day refuses to do anything meaningful to provide leadership to quench the wildfire of infection. As a result, we are watching our economy and our standing in the world crumble around us.
Even my brilliant friend didn't argue that Trump had that kind of influence with Americans, though he didn't agree that Trump had squandered it regarding the pandemic; instead, he changed the subject. When I said Trump held the most powerful position in the world, his wife wasn't so sure that was true. She said she thought the influencers around Trump, like Bill Gates were more powerful. I'm sure my mouth flew open. But this was a situation when you knew there was just too much misinformation to correct and there was no point in trying.
I know we all have a right to our opinions, but when intelligent people cling to bullshit propaganda to maintain their loyalty to a party, when they cannot see the true peril of our Democracy because they are blindly loyal to a brand, it is not only disappointing, it is heartbreaking. I feel so sad and now even more alarmed for my nation.

(6,832 posts)They probably make up those languages. You can tell if you watch their prepositions.
It's like, one day you come in from the rice fields, feed and bed down the water buffalo, looking forward to the wife's cooking, a good tired. Discuss the weather with the in-laws and plan for the communal harvest. All in your sleepy little backwater village, just as it's been for a thousand years. And then, with a sudden roar, fire from the sky, napalm, burns everything into forgotten history.
But will it play in Boston? Relevance is fleeting, no?

(53,410 posts)Its evident in your friends inability to be truly objective. You can always tell if they cling to an explanation or theory thats no longer relevant. And if they allow all kinds of transgressions to pass in order to follow a leader.
Its not really what they believe as much as its something they want to believe. Maybe your friends simply wont find fault in fellow Republicans. Or it might be a last ditch effort to try to stay loyal to their party. It might be too painful to see your party destroy itself so badly.
I know it would break my heart if the Democratic Party was destroying itself as badly as the Republican Party is. Ask yourself how you would feel and maybe you can understand better. Thats what Ive done. I know it would be devastating.

(740 posts)if our party was acting like the GOP, or a Democratic President was acting like Trump. We would be among the first ones to call both out for those actions. That is the biggest difference between the Republican base and us.

(2,430 posts)...and it could be by design, not accident. We can't get what we need to care for the sick, to stem the spread of the virus, we are constantly fighting misinformation, a crashing economy, and look forward to increasing homelessness, joblessness, and a population with compromised health due to the long-term effects of the virus. This, on top of all the other ways this administration has destroyed our standing in the world. Trump not only appears to be a naked emperor, but the entire nation also appears naked, exposed. Who/what nation benefits from the United States being in such a situation?
