I have experienced a fascinating realization:

As I’ve mentioned in a couple of posts here, I have an hour and 10 minute commute each way to work these days and instead of listening to MSNBC back-and-forth, I began listening to the audiobook written and read by Trump’s niece. It is, to say the least, overwhelming to hear her tell the tale in her voice. I had started reading the book And was extremely impressed at her narrative style and of course the story.

But nothing prepared me for the experience of listening to her relate these incidents with her emotionality at appropriate levels. I might suggest anyone who has access to audiobooks to give it a try and listen if nothing else but the prologue.

But I believe this woman would love never to have been associated with the family that, in her view, destroyed her father and scorned her mother and engaged in unethical and illegal financial dealings without regret or compunction. In fact, her book portrays the entire vile family as cold, unemotional bordering on sociopathic, and in general the sort of crud you'd throw your shoes away if it was stuck on their soles.

In other words, I do not think Mary Trump would disagree with your sentiments in any way

I have always thought of DT and his family as the sort of crud you describe so I don't think I would really gain much from the read or the listen. I am happy she has shared her inside and informed opinion with the public, but I see nothing new in the revelations I have heard on TV or Radio.

He is self indulgent piece of scum from a family of scum. Got that long ago.

She seems to have come through an ugly experience living among cold hearted sociopaths in reasonably good mental health. Plus, she appears set to sue the crap out of every one of them for defrauding her of millions in inheritance -- but it would be a sweeter ending to her story if they all just went to prison and died there.

For a mere $27 a year you can buy a Library Card for Fairfax County Library IF you have a library card. My friends there say it’s contents and services are fantastic

https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/non-resident-library-card-application

Share Libby info far and wide

Even Michelle Obama’s bio is available. And Mary Trumps book as well

I just finished Dan Brown’s “Origin”

Very cool book, well written, easy fast read.

Next up. Bossie Pants by Tina Fey for a bit of humor

I started wondering if I'd prefer the audio book, but hadn't checked who narrated it. I do like it when authors of autobiographies narrate their own stories. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to do just that!

to hear her narrate it herself.

It is awfully well written and I absolutely believe she wrote it herself. She avoids the mistakes a lot of first-time authors make, and she knows how to conclude a paragraph powerfully, and to zone in on specific details while not getting bogged down in the peripheral or mundane. She has a sharp eye for what's important, excellent memory for particulars, and is honest when she can't recall something. It's an authentic and most valuable contribution to this genre.

I ordered a second copy because I want to re-read it and make some marks on the text, and I hate to mark up an "only copy."

I want to be able to lend it out to others as well.

because no one named "Trump" would ever hire a ghostwriter, right?

mikec, I, too, find her a good writer. I know exactly what you mean about certain sentences and paragraphs. There are some I just marvel at because they are so insightful. I wish now I'd highlighted; I'm on the 7th chapter so now I think I'll go back and highlight before I get too much farther.

What I find interesting is that we have someone with her qualifications in that hideous, dysfunctional family--and who is extraordinarily capable of writing a compelling book. Almost all of the family members are sociopaths or have some other dysfunctionality. I shudder to think how one could get out of a family like that with any sense of normalcy.

The ingrained sexism (how they divided the family up, such as the mother only dealing with girl issues, the father with boy issues), the racism, the lawsuits over it...I just think how did you (meaning Trump's father and mother) ever get to be so sick?

than I. I have had it for weeks and am only half way through. It is clunky to me. And time periods seems so mixed and not in chronological order.

I believe she wrote the book but would have had to have had a lot of input from someone else. Unless she started taking notes at 6 years old.

Also see her driven by the love of her dad. Nothing wrong with that, just colors her opinions in my mind.

it would be natural to write in logical, not necessarily chronological order. By the way, have you heard her tell various interviewers that her aunt, Maryanne, was very helpful?

Every once in a while a narrator really improves a book, but usually it's quite the opposite for me. The last book I listened to that was elevated by the narration was Middlesex, and that was several years ago.

I also ordered the audio book and it just arrived yesterday. I also listen to audio books in my car when I have to drive any distance (not often these days) and I've listened to Jimmy Carter's autobiography (read by the author!) a few dozen times so I decided to listen to Mary Trump's book for awhile. BTW, I also recommend Jimmy Carter's autobiography ("A Full Life: Reflections at 90" ) highly, he really has led a full and fascinating life!
