She packed her bags, quit her job in law enforcement and moved to Mexico after George Floyd's death

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/04/us/demetria-brown-law-enforcement-mexico-trnd/index.html

(CNN)Demetria Brown knew the exact moment she decided she'd had it.

She'd just watched a video of George Floyd pinned under an officer's knee, saying he couldn't breathe as he begged for his life. She sobbed as she played it over and over.

On June 1, a week after Floyd's death, she quit her job as a detention officer for the Los Angeles County Probation Department. In the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic, she sold her house, stuffed her belongings into 13 duffel bags and relocated to Puerto Vallarta on Mexico's Pacific coast.

Brown, 42, is one of many African Americans leaving the United States permanently for many reasons, including racism and fear of police brutality. Her flight landed in her new hometown on June 25, a month to the day Floyd died.

"Watching that video -- my heart broke and sank all at the same time," Brown says. "That video served as my final confirmation that I was doing the best thing for my life by departing the United States of America permanently."

I did quite a bit of traveling before my passport essentially became worthless this year.

The USA ain't all it's cracked up to be.

I hope she worked for LA County long enough to have her retirement vested. She may be able to start getting it sooner than 65, and whatever it is will be an important piece of income.

Best of luck, Demetria. I’m so very sorry this country failed you.

Not so sure about the racism that exists in the USA being as bad or worse down here. I'm not a man of color, but Mexico has it's own problems. I live in Guanajuato state, which is one of the most desirable and beautiful places in Mexico. The cartels have moved in, and now it's one of the most violent places in all of Mexico. Plenty of murders in the state now...but I still prefer it to living in the USA.
Maybe one day she can return...or will want to. Right now, the USA is in serious turmoil. Racism isn't in the closet any longer, and there are plenty of mentally unstable people on the streets who make it even more dangerous than ever. Unfortunately, ALL the closets have been opened, and nobody is hiding their hatred and anger any longer. It's all out there to see and deal with.

I'm hoping one day to return. It is getting expensive for a fixed income in the US, and as millions more are entering poverty levels, very little has been done to help stop the tide for the last 40 years. Maybe...just maybe if the Democrats get control of the government, we can inject some much needed socialism into the society that is needed to help stop the fall. But chances are not good. Too much control is given to the oligarchs and corporations. I don't think they are going to want to give it up...willingly.

Good luck America. I saw your best days. I don't ever expect those days to return again. At best, we can chip away at the edges....but making a real transformation in the future is next to impossible, in my humble opinion.
