As three former presidents gathered in Atlanta last week to offer stirring tributes to John Lewis, President Trump was absent. In an interview that aired Monday night, Trump had few kind words of his own for the former Democratic congressman and civil rights leader, who died July 17.
Asked by interviewer Jonathan Swan how history would remember Lewiss contributions to the nation, Trump demurred.
I dont know. I dont know John Lewis, Trump said in the Axios on HBO interview. He chose not to come to my inauguration.
Pressed by Swan on whether he found Lewis impressive, Trump was likewise noncommittal.

(11,738 posts)Trump is a disgrace. He has debased the office of the presidency. It would have been a dishonor for him to go to Lewis' funeral and his presence would not have carried the importance that the presence of Presidents Obama, Clinton, and even Bush Jr. did. The three former Presidents have at least, conducted themselves in a way that has been at worst, neutral while Presidents Obama and Clinton have been outstanding former Presidents. Trump will likely never be invited to State functions as a former president. He is an embarrassment.
That simple phrase, "I don't know John Lewis" says it all. EVERYONE knows John Lewis, anyone who has even a modicum of understanding of the struggle for Civil Rights in this country, has heard of John Lewis. EVERYONE in any national political office should know John Lewis. It was just another lie and petty grievance from a broken husk of a man.

(82,849 posts)Swan was having none of it, but I would have liked to see Trump challenged: If you've done so much for Black people, why didn't any of them want you at any of the memorial services for John Lewis? Is it your position that every Black person in the country is just flat-out ignorant of all you've done for them, or are you lying like a cheap rug?
