McConnell has 17-point lead over Democratic challenger McGrath: poll
By Alexander Bolton - 08/04/20 10:08 AM EDT
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is leading his Democratic opponent, Amy McGrath, by a commanding 17 points in a new poll that shows the GOP leader ahead 53 to 36 percent.
Eighty-four percent of Republicans polled by Morning Consult said they support McConnell while 79 percent of Democrats said they back McGrath. Twelve percent of Democrats said they also support McConnell.
The GOP leader also has more support among independents than McGrath, with 45 percent backing McConnell and 33 percent favoring McGrath.
The survey of 700 likely voters in Kentucky, reported on by the Louisville Courier Journal, was conducted online from July 24 to Aug. 2 and had a margin of error of 3.5 percent.

Here in NC Jesse Helms kept winning with help of some Dems because he brought fed money to NC and his local offices provided effective reliable constituent services.

(70,242 posts)well, this shows why McConnell's lead is so big. Kentucky loves the Trumpster (not surprised)
.........The new Morning Consult poll shows Trump with a huge lead over former Vice President Joe Biden in Kentucky, 59 to 35 percent.
The Louisville Courier Journal, however, noted that Trumps lead is smaller than his 30-point margin of victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

(21,949 posts)Democrats haven't won a Senate race there since 1992, so this is roughly equivalent to Republicans worrying that they're not within striking distance in New York (they last won a Senate seat there in 1992 also, and yes, I know there isn't a Senate race there this year -- this is just for historical comparison).
To look on the bright side though, if during a presidential election year the news media were publishing stories about the current state of a New York Senate race, I'd probably be nervous about what that might mean for our chances nationally. (To put it in perspective, Gillibrand won her race by 34 points in 2018 and Schumer won his race by 44 points in 2016 -- McConnell is only ahead by 17 in this poll).

(6,363 posts)I said it in another thread about a different rural red area...but have any yall actually been to rural Kentucky.
Not to pick on any of the few rural KY Dems who might be here...but try Paris, KY. Try Dry Ridge or Hebron. Try Ashland. These seem like people who will eat glass to retain their sense of superiority (much of which is long gone). This is the state that when BHO administration offered free retraining to coal miners, the program shut down as only 1-2% of eligible folks took part...then they moaned that they got no help from the government. These folks are the core of the base and Mitch knows it.
Sorry to rant. I love McGrath but shes wasted on a state like KY.

But they keep voting him back in.
Amy has the best chance I've seen in a long time and I hope she knocks him off.
Edit to add the poll given isn't reliable - and a big GOTV push is sure to help.

(14,565 posts)That state is among many where party registration and party identification are basically worthless. Tens of thousands of registered Democrats in Kentucky never bothered to change parties even though all they do is vote Republican.
For example, 28% of Kentucky Democrats voted for Bush in 2004 and 30% for McCain in 2008.
Kentucky hasn't been exit polled recently but I doubt much has changed.
This is the reason I always look at ideology and totally ignore party percentages.
