Report: Coronavirus infected scores of children and staff at Georgia sleep-away camp .The finding that children 'might play an important role in transmission is likely to fuel debates about whether to reopen schools. The analysis, released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, details an outbreak at a sleep-away camp in Georgia last month in which 260 children and staffers more than three-quarters of the 344 tested contracted the virus less than a week after spending time together in close quarters. The children had a median age of 12. The camp had required all 597 campers and staff members to provide documentation that they had tested negative for the virus before coming. Staff were required to wear masks, but children were not.
While similar clusters have occurred around funerals, weddings, teenage parties and adult gatherings throughout the pandemic, few super-spreading events have been documented among children.
The report is likely to add fuel to an already polarizing nationwide discussion about whether sending children back to crowded school buildings is worth the risk, in large part because so little data has been available about childrens vulnerability to the infection and their ability to transmit the virus.

In a few weeks, when thousands of children, teachers and their families begin to test positive, and possibly die, Trump, DeVos and certain governors will pretend no one could have predicted the tragedy.

(6,209 posts)Having been a camp counselor in my younger years I would guess that 90 to 95 percent of the average sunny summer day was spent OUTDOORS. Swimming, boating, water skiing, sailing, baseball, archery, nature studies, summer camp stuff. Our kids were not allowed back into sleeping cabins until after supper activities. Usually around 7:30 to 8:00. Lights out at 9:00. Breakfast at 7:00 after mandatory morning swim (bath) in the lake.
So my point being I would imagine it was a similar schedule at the camp in Northern Wisconsin. We have had very few rainy days in this region. We have had pass through showers but that would keep you inside for limited amounts of time.
SO what is going to happen when 18-30 kids are going to be confined to classrooms for the majority of the day. As a matter of, course recess in our local schools is 30 minutes outside after lunch.
I do not see how schools are going to be safe for students or staff. With daily Covid numbers climbing in our region.
IF and that is a BIG IF we ever get back to normal school days I don't believe it will be UNTIL AFTER we have a proven tested vaccine and there are FREE adequate quantities so it can be administered to students, staff and community members. AND we have CONTACT TRACING and reporting of all new cases in place.
Then what about school sports including Friday night indoor community activities. Basketball and Volleyball are what folks in this region do in their evenings. Gyms packed with supporters from far and near.
If we still had school-age kids this ex-medic would not be sending them to school this fall.
Our government has failed us in dealing with this PANDEMIC. This was a federal problem and should not have been left to unqualified state staff to handle on their own.
