Summer Camp Took Almost Every Precaution. The Majority of Kids Still Got COVID-19.
THE KIDS ARENT ALRIGHT
At least 76 percent of young campers who were tested came back positivean ominous sign as schools push to reopen by the fall.
As state officials across the country scramble to solidify plans to reopen schools in the fall, a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzing the transmission rate at a Georgia overnight camp suggests that the spread of the coronavirus among students is inevitable.
The study, released Friday, analyzed 597 children and staff who attended the overnight camp between June 21 and June 27. At the end of the week, 76 percent of campers who were tested came back positivedespite the organizers following most state guidelines set by the governor and the CDC.
The camp, however, didnt require campers to wear masks, only the staff, or open windows and doors for increased ventilation, per CDC guidelines. And it allowed attendees to engage in outdoor and indoor activitieslike singing and cheeringthat also contributed to the high transmission rate, the report stated.
These findings demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 spread efficiently in a youth-centric overnight setting, resulting in high attack rates among persons in all age groups, despite efforts by camp officials to implement most recommended strategies to prevent transmission, the report said, noting that the median age for the campers was 12 and the gender split was even.
The report said it only took two days for a teenage staff member at the camp to develop chills and leave the camp.
The next day, she tested positive for the coronavirusprompting the camp to immediately begin sending attendees home before closing its doors on June 27.

(90,364 posts)... informed us they're not sending their kids on the bus but they'll go to school during the day where they aren't required to wear masks !!
WTF, these people aren't MAGA Suckers either ... the CDC and NIH are doing a horrible jobs of flooding the social sphere when it comes to masks or there has been so much disinformation when it comes to kids.
Also, what jobs do people think are out there to get ?!
We're net negative jobs now

(43,049 posts)this year. The site was closed down, so we didn't have to make the choice.
Someone came up with an alternate site that was superclean and safe and all that stuff. I'm on the board and was kinda shocked anyone would suggest it, but we gave them their shot to make the case. Then we unanimously thanked them for their effort and told them no.
Stories like this don't make happy that we dodged the bullet as much as make me sad that there's this bullet to be dodged.
And, masks, schmasks. Someone brought it in and masking all the kids would not have affected the inevitability of it all.

(11,885 posts)Will suffer from permanent damage done from this virus. Now they want school started in person? That's criminal neglect from trump and these Governors promoting this. They are aware of the damage that could result from sending them back now. trump refuses to even make a mask mandate.

(26,636 posts)No masks, no ventilation while indoors, singing indoors or in close proximity.
Although I don't doubt that those will be the same protocols followed in many schools, especially in red states.

(44,974 posts)No mask requirement for the campers, no increased ventilation, allowing indoor activities like singing-we know full well singing spreads covid. If those re the guidelines, they clearly aren't adequate.
