Trump demands schools reopen so kids can eat after trying to cut school lunches

By Emily Singer -July 31, 2020 3:27 PM

Trump's 2020 budget would have taken away free lunch from nearly 1 million kids.

Donald Trump and his administration have been demanding that schools reopen in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic as it ravages large swaths of the country — often using the argument that millions of children rely on schools to provide them with the nutrition they otherwise do not get at home.

"Thirty million American students rely on schools for free and reduced meals," Trump said at a July 23 news conference, listing off one of the reasons he wants kids to go back to school even as schools struggle with finding the space and the resources to safely reopen for full-time in-person learning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also listed nutritional needs as a reason for full school reopening in a document Trump demanded from the government health agency.

"Extended school closures can be harmful to the nutritional health of children," the CDC wrote in a July 23 post titled "The Importance of Reopening America’s Schools this Fall. "Schools are essential to meeting the nutritional needs of children with many consuming up to half their daily calories at school."

Why does he need those kids in school so bad?

They seem desperate, what with all the spouting statistics about how dangerous it is for children to stay at home in Fauci’s hearing this morning. And now this.

Why so focused on schoolchildren? It’s almost like they are trying to speed up the spread of the virus.

Resist.

ignore this idiot. He's the one whose caused the health crisis. The kids shouldn't be put in this situation risking their health, or our teachers. This will cause just more spreading of the virus , and prolong the economic pain from being this stupid . Whose going to pay for their medical bills and possible health issues from it? We know trump and Moscow Mitch sure won't.

I am sure (well I hope) this subject has been discussed and/or some reporter has asked this but why is it that people have to rely on School for their children to be fed.

This to me is one of the major signs that our society is in deep trouble. Now I can see schools providing free lunch. Kids can't always have their parents pack them a lunch. I grew up middle class but my parents were often both running out the door and weren't able to pack me a lunch.

The problem is that we have families who rely on schools for their nutritional needs.

There should not be one person in this country that cannot access food for lack of resources. That is a crime.

Idiot Trump wants to cut off a million kids from school nutrition, but there should not be a need for that at all. This is not a school issue this is a societal issue.
