I don't start threads normally,

but the wisdom of the group here is exactly what I need. I just received a letter informing me I received enough write-in votes in the July primary to become a member of the Democratic County Committee. I have until the end of the month to sign and notarize. What is this position? I am very excited, this seems like such a wonderful thing, but also very nervous and unsure what this entails. I wouldn’t take a responsibility like this lightly...so, what are the responsibilities?

it's going to depend entirely on the locality and the rules of that committee. They will all be different, so you're not likely to get an answer here.

It’s not a great honor, but it is a great opportunity for you to meet and interact with fellow Democrats and work for common goals.

If you have the time, I would do it.

good info to get me started, and a nice chuckle in there too. I did email the gentleman listed as the contact person. He appears to be the chairman, so I’m trying to do my homework while I wait to hear back from him. I don’t know enough to know what I should ask him. It’s funny how I was just staring at this paperwork trying to make sense of it, it came as a complete surprise, and I got very emotional when I read through the oath of allegiance. I don’t know that I could say that out loud to anyone in real life.

Just kidding!

I've served on my Democratic County Committee off and on for years. Some people work hard to promote the party in their county, some people just want to be 'in the know', and others may want to use it to build their resume within the party. Our committee is based on precinct (2 peeps from every precinct in the county).

I'm lucky to belong to a county party that is incredibly organized, creative, and effective. We have neighborhoods committees within the city and suburbs that (among other things) organize meetings, candidate meet & greets, fundraisers, voter registration/absentee ballot request booths, and Get Out the Vote. Some counties committees are fairly disfunctional and not effective; they could really use some help.

By all means, check it out by attending a few meetings, talking with the county chair and other committee members, and read the minutes of recent past meetings to see if your talent and time are a good fit.

I don't know your county but I bet they can use all the help they can get.
