Georgia governor withdraws emergency request to stop Atlanta mask mandate

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on Tuesday withdrew his emergency request for a court to stop enforcement of Atlantas requirement that faces masks be worn in all public places, while mediation over the states legal effort to block the mandate proceeds.
Kemp sued Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and the city two weeks ago to stop enforcement of the local mandate, aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus. The governor argued that the city lacks the authority to override his order encouraging but not requiring face coverings.
In a statement, the Republican governors office said that the motion was withdrawn, to continue productive, good faith negotiations with city officials and prepare for a future hearing on the merits of our legal position.
Mayor Bottoms, a Democrat, has said that she would continue to defy the governors orders, but hoped that the two sides could find a solution.

He may win in the end, but the optics are not in his favor. Most sane people think masks are a good idea. Atlanta has the better position.

(54,770 posts)4. It's not really a withdrawal ending action, as both sides are forced into mediation.

(25,986 posts)8. Yes, they are. It's frightening.
We keep zooming up the list at Worldometer, and the number of new cases per day keeps growing, all because Kemp insists on kissing trump's ass so hard. I've been home almost five months now, with no end in sight, and it just keeps getting worse.
