Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Officially Become Greek Citizens

The Oscar winner and his famed wife have officially become Greek citizens. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, confirmed the personal news in an Instagram post he shared on Saturday along with a photo of the two stars holding up their Greek passports.

As Hanks tweeted on Jan. 2, "Starting 2020 as an Honorary citizen of all of Greece! Kronia pola! ( more or less, "happy year!&quot . Hanx."

The couple share many ties to the country, as they have often vacationed in Greece over the years. Wilson is also of Greek ancestry and the two are Greek Orthodox.

Dual citizenship is common with Greek families. My wife is Greek, and my SIL and in-laws have it. kysrsoze Jul 2020 #7

My company is a global 1, I have good contacts in our Canada offices, I will absolutely apply for jobs in Canada if Trump stays in office. Trump's vision of America is one where dissent is quashed with state violence. 4 more years of Trump and they'll be butchering liberals in the streets en masse.

As a dual citizen, I know far too well.

I think they might be using it as an escape hatch if Trump is re-elected - Greece is part of the EU, so they could live anywhere in the EU.

My sister-in-law worked there for a few years, so she applied while she was there. If you spend a lot of time there, it makes things easier. My in-laws spend almost every summer in their village. Since Rita Wilson is Greek and they're there so much, it makes sense for them.

I very briefly met Tom & Rita (as in we were on the same room and they waved) when they were hosting a Greek festival fundraising at St Sophia, a historic Greek Orthodox church in the Pico Union area.
