When John Lewis, the civil rights icon and longtime Democratic congressman from Georgia, died at the age of 80 a little over a week ago, President Donald Trump publicly ignored his passing for about 12 hours.
As the news broke late on a Friday and remembrances poured in, the president was blasting out nearly four dozen tweets and retweets about various other topics, from his nieces scathing new book to former Vice President Joe Biden.
Trumps muted reaction to the death of a historic figure albeit one with whom he disagreed is just the latest instance of how he struggles to respond as a typical president would in these situations, an issue that critics have pounced on in recent months as coronavirus deaths continue to pile up with only passing mentions from Trump.
Its also an illustration of the strikingly different ways Trump has treated the passing of iconic figures, a contrast that was brought into stark relief by how he reacted to the death of a beloved TV personality on Saturday.

(7,947 posts)So much so that he was asked by the family to give a eulogy for John McCain, his 2008 opponent.
I guess it's because he's a real decent human being.

(7,947 posts)But I think he had the perfect temperament for a president, like FDR.
He was calm, thoughtful, intelligent, compassionate, and didn't hold grudges.
Most of all, he had common sense mixed with elegance.
It was the perfect temperament, which is why I think he was so popular in Europe and our other allies. They knew he would be fair and thoughtful.
Biden's also got a good temperament. He's warm and easy-going, along with the whole intelligent thoughtful thing, which shouldn't be that unusual, but... Trump has none of this!
Obama chose the right person as VEEP. Biden will too.
Too bad both had to come in saving the country from GOP malfeasance, but they are the best for the job.

(9,086 posts)Was he even invited? Not that it would matter. If he was, he would likely refuse anyway just to do the opposite.

I'm glad he wasn't there. Rep. Lewis deserves to have his great life celebrated by people who love and respect him. No way Trump wouldn't make a gross spectacle to make it all about himself in some way.

John Lewis was right, of course,.. he said the didn't recognize him as "legitimate" and neither do I.
