Senate expected to renew eviction moratorium, but rent is still due Aug. 1
The eviction moratorium established by the federal CARES Act ran out last week, meaning as many as 23 million US families who are behind on rent are at risk of their housing. On Sunday, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said that the Senate's proposal for the next stimulus bill, CARES 2, includes "plans to lengthen the federal eviction moratorium," according to CNBC.
The Republican-led Senate is expected to unveil its plan Monday, but Congressional Democrats will need some time to weigh in on the proposal before it's brought to a vote. We expect the final decision to come during the first week in August, leaving millions of Americans vulnerable during the gap. Some landlords have already reportedly filed for evictions in violation of the law, even before the protection ended. Housing advocates say that without an eviction ban they expect a "tsunami of evictions."
Meanwhile, statewide eviction prohibitions have mostly either already expired or will soon, many with no replacement in sight. Michigan, for example, let its eviction moratorium lapse, as have several other states. A handful of states never canceled evictions to begin with.
