Be completely honest here.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, good would have ever come out of Trump paying his “respects” to John Lewis.

Undoubtedly he would had said something so narcissistic, off topic or wholly inappropriate because that’s just his nature.

So I’m not going to jump on Trump for not doing or saying anything about Congressman Lewis.

If anything, I consider it a complete blessing so we can focus all our attention on honoring a great American as opposed to having to be distracted by however Trump predictably made a huge ass out of himself.

His reasons for not going, of course, are, as usual, obnoxious. But the outcome is a good one.

He didn't need to be there and no one wanted him there. And his being there would have been turned into a thing about him and no good would come of it.

So I'm glad he stayed away, regardless his reasons.

Congressman Lewis' family didn't have to ask him not to come!

I agree - it is MUCH better that he stay away - I wish he would do that for EVERYTHING in DC!

I made a graphic today slamming Trump for not attending, but I agree that he should not have gone to “pay his respects” to John Lewis — he wouldn’t have been welcome there, and his presence would have made a mockery of the occasion.

I’m still going to jump on him though, because how fucked up is it that we have a president who can’t go to pay his respects to John Lewis, because he wouldn’t have been welcome there and his presence would have made a mockery of the occasion?

...in hypocrisy. One cannot pay what one does not feel, and we all know that Trump would not have felt any respect for Congressman Lewis.

But I don't credit him for that - he is not that enlightened. I'm sure his reasons were immature and self-serving as always.

There was nothing to be gained. Hopefully the WH issued an appropriate statement to mark the passing of the Congressman, but beyond that it was best he stayed away.

It could also be that the "Esteemed" Mr Trump has figured out that he isn't welcome at these sorts of things.
