I realize the grammatical problems it presents, but when talking about Mexico and the United States of America at the same time, then it has always struck me as presumptuous to claim a monopoly on the word "American".

Now, sure, in casual speech referring to the US or to one's national identication, we have a much more unfortunate name that doesn't boil down to a good single word.. like Usian or Estadounidense.

But if my understanding is correct, Mexicans have no problem using one word to identify the nationality, among other assumed qualities, of the likes of His Royal Romnificence.

We are ALL Americans. Somos todos Americanos. And we are exceptional.
