A friend found him today on his couch at home, and our younger brother called me.
Think a good thought for him, my friends. He was 71 and it was COPD and emphysema that got him in the end. We remaining siblings are grieving from SoCal to New York state and up to Oregon, where he had lived for over 50 years. We dont know when we will be able to be together again, but I told our younger brother that from the first time I heard Liam Clancy sing The Parting Glass, I knew that song would be Joes elegy. So he pulled it up on You Tube and we cried together.

Cant seem to stop crying. Thank you all.

(1,725 posts)... and the song. I recognize it. It was beautifully sung in a series I love, won't mention it now. But how sweet of all of you to give such a tribute to him. Love to you all.

This is a beautiful song. My Great Grandmother was a Clancy, a cousin of these guys. I sadly never knew her well enough to learn more. A beautiful tribute.
Be well. May he rest in peace and may you find peace in time.

(90,793 posts)We were way the hell and gone living on Oahu in the 50s and 60s, a beautiful place to be sure, but in all seriousness, the only thing to tell us we were Irish besides Mom was the music of the Clancy Brothers. We didnt even know we looked Irish, which it turns out we surely do.
I had the great good fortune about 10 years ago to take a musical tour of Ireland with Robbie OConnells Celtica Tours. As you probably know, hes a younger cousin of the Clancy Bros. I hope he and his tour business survive the bad times we are living through, as Id love to go again someday.
Now theres a thought to smile on.

(297,655 posts)Loss, Hekate!
We lost our dear sister, Mary, the day after Christmas last year unexpectedly & shockingly. She would have been 73 on February 10, 2020.
We were able to all go to Los Angeles from all over the Mainland and Hawaii to be with her daughter & her son who came in from Florida. I'm really sorry you all can't be together now.. Hopefully someday soon you can all get together in person to hug and celebrate Joe's life!
In the meantime you have Liam Clancy's beautiful, poignant song to bring together.

Oh, he had such sweethearts in his wild and woolly youth. He never married, but two of those ladies stayed in his life until he was an old man.
And he could tell such tales, when he had a glass in his hand.

we take them with us, you know. we carry a part of them with us for the rest of our journey here. and they carry a part of us when they go. love never dies -- it goes on, and on, and on. and with that we are forever connected. and together.
that's a beautiful, sorrowful song--i never heard it before. thank you for sharing it, along with your grief. i'm crying for you as well as for me as i remember and miss those i have lost from this world.

(2,357 posts)Of all the money that e'er I had
I spent it in good company
And all the harm I've ever done
Alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be to you all
So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate'er befalls
Then gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all
Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it fell into my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all
Fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate'er befalls
Then gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all
La ra la ra la la
La lala lala la la
La ra lala la la
La la la lala la la
But since it fell into my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all
So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate'er befalls
Then gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all
Good night and joy be to you all

(90,793 posts)...say some of the things I would have said if I were not so alone just now.
Im doing okay, thanks. I needed yesterday to sit with it, and all of you helped, maybe more than you know.
I got to talk to our sis today (New York state, Im in SoCal) and we agreed the hardest part is not being able to be together until God knows when. When the day comes, I think just the three of us remaining sibs and our spouses will fly to Oregon to lift a glass and scatter his ashes, along with his lifelong friends.
The death wasnt unexpected, as he got within a hair of dying last November, but it is still sad and will remain sad its a break in the link to our shared past. At 71 he was a year younger than me, and Im the eldest of we four.
