The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Saturday as demonstrators were marching through the downtown Austin, police spokesperson Katrina Ratliff told reporters early Sunday. The man who was shot was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The vehicle honked, turned onto a street and sped through the protesters before he apparently hit an orange barrier and stopped, witness Michael Capochiano, who took part in the demonstration, told the Austin American-Statesman. A protester with a rifle approached the vehicle and was shot by the driver, who then drove off, he said.
Ratliff confirmed that initial reports indicated the victim may have been carrying a rifle. She said the driver was detained and was cooperating with police. She didnt release the names of the driver or the man who was killed. There was no answer at a number for an Austin police spokesperson late Sunday morning.

(51,197 posts)I've read victim fired first, driver fired first, victim pointed rifle at car. Someone has to have video.

I did see dashcam video of another view. It shows the driver not stopping at a red light and making a right hand turn into the protesters. I guess they would crowd around his vehicle for obvious reasons, but I have no idea if the photo is even them or if the protester was brandishing his gun or not.

(25,555 posts)I can understand protesters wanting to carry guns, but we may be seeing the early consequences. (Yesterday's event in Kentucky with accidental discharge) This is all so new to protestors on the left. It's always been the right who are armed.
Several BLM protesters were armed in that Austin group last night.
