New York lawmakers pass automatic voter registration and absentee ballot protections
ALBANY New York lawmakers acted on a host of voter protection measures this week, including a long-stalled bill adopting automatic voter registration.
Democrats, who control both the Senate and Assembly, reached a deal and passed reworked legislation that will automatically register New Yorkers to vote when they visit a DMV or other state agencies....
The measure suspends a law barring local boards of election from processing mail-in ballot applications until 30 days preceding an election. Now, applications can be approved as soon as they are received.....
Other bills passed by the Senate on Wednesday will give voters the opportunity to fix any deficiencies in their absentee ballot envelopes and ensures ballots are counted as long as they are received and timestamped by the day after Election Day.
