Is there no control over what kind of advertisements are allowed here? Just seems so wrong.
I was looking at a thread where there was a poster with some Trump supporters holding hybrid US/Nazi flags with a meme:
"You don't get to be a Nazi and a Proud American. We literally won a war about this. The whole world was involved"
... and on that page were not one, but two Trump advertisements, one showing Trump in a Kung Fu pose about to kick Joe Biden in the head with "Finish Him!' and another saying Trump is working around the clock to restore Law and Order...
It makes me want to puke. Are they paying for this advertisement in rubles?
I know many will tell me that I can just become a star member and then I won't see them, but that is not the point, and I have personal reasons why I can not make any payments to a site named DemocraticUnderground.
The world is upside down.

So Simple.

(6,488 posts)You can probably close the link immediately and DU would still get paid. However, God only knows what kind of crap they may put on your computer.

Just make sure you have your system well atomized and several virus scan utilities running.
Also, you can only click on the link once in a 24 hour period. Multiple clicks won't incur extra charges for Trump Campaign.

(34,087 posts)Ads are served without advance review. That's the way the ad server works. If you find an ad you belive should not be here, capture the information about it and report it here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=ata
That will allow the admins to assess the ad and, if they agree it should not be on DU, prevent future display of those ads.
Sorry if I sound cranky, but this question comes up in every election cycle (at least once). The responses are always - hey kick in a few bucks, or hey, let them spend their money here. Neither of these address the underlying question: how to get rid of ads that don't belong here.
Nictuku
(3,617 posts)That is the question. They don't belong here, and if we can, I'd like to get rid of them.
I was kind of surprised that I felt really upset to see them here. On almost all the pages I view.
I am on a different computer than what I usually use, so no ad blocker (I'll install one). Personal reasons where I can not donate.
I did take some screenshots and was going to upload them in my post, but apparently my photobucket account was closed for lack of use over the years. Anyway, I would have to sign up again, and it was just getting too complicated.
If the ad content is picked up from my browser history ... on this computer is really just primarily here, facebook, email. Its a backup computer.
My post was really just a question, I don't think it worthy of escalating it to a level of filing a complaint. There were some interesting responses.

(34,087 posts)Ads for Republicans usually stop showing up, once reported.
It's not "filing a complaint." It's the process used to tweak the ads appearing here. There is no advance review of ads served They are typically triggered by the content of the page - and since Trump is a hot topic here, it isn't surprising that a fair number of trump ads turn up. The only way for DU to be served inoffensive ads is for people to let the admins know what's going on so they can contact the ad service and have ads from that source blocked.

(9,674 posts)I get them on my phone, but not the laptop which has an adblocker. And one of these days there will be a little, gold star in the top left.

(6,150 posts)I'm a Star Member, so I'm not sure how things look if you are not. But, when you log in, go to "My Account" in the upper right hand side. Under "My Account" you should see several tabs, and the last one is "Star Membership". I think you can sign up there.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,895 posts)several links after your name. Click on My Account, and then the tab to the far right which says Star Membership. You'll then find a link to allow you to donate. You can get away with as little as five bucks a year if you wish.

(3,617 posts)I can not make any *partisan* donations. My job would be at stake. Something showing up as "DemocraticUnderground" is partisan. I can't lose my job. I'm about to turn 59. Try looking for a job at 59.

(11,949 posts)And if trump wants to spend money advertising on DU I see it as money wasted.
If you really object to seeing those ads there is an easy fix. Contribute a little to DU. Get a star. No ads.

(4,131 posts)Also, pay $5 to DU for the year in addition to getting an ad blocker for the rest of the Internet.
