State officials warn it would take 8-20 weeks to implement Trump's 'sliding scale' for unemployment

The White House announced last week it wants to end the $600 weekly unemployment checks Americans' have received during the pandemic and replace them with payments of up to 70% of a worker's previous wages.

But the National Association of State Workforce Agencies warned Congress that it would take the majority of states between 8 and 20 weeks to transition to this more complex method of calculating individuals' benefits, according to a memo obtained by NPR.

Under President Donald Trump's proposed system, Americans' average weekly federal unemployment would drop to about $200.

State unemployment systems have already struggled to meet the demand of the approximately 30 million Americans currently on unemployment, in part because of outdated technology. Officials say switching to a system based on partial wage reimbursement would involve a more complicated and time-consuming process of gathering information about every unemployed person's former wages.

Either everyone scampers out and applies for any crappy job they can get (and berate those not hired as "You're clearly not trying hard enough" ) or they start committing crimes and Trump can send his goon squads out to take care of them.

All by design, folks.

this year? Only worked part time last year but full time this year? An appeals court would be needed. A flat addition is the only practical way.

That is recorded by the state unemployment. The state doesn’t automatically pay just because you apply, they have the data already. Taxes are much more complicated and the state has no problem collecting that proper amount. Paying is just the reverse.

with enormous backlogs now. Some people are self-employed and don’t qualify for unemployment insurance normally. There’s a very good reason why they did it the way they did it. Anything more refined is not going to get money into the hands of people quickly .

If you pay in payroll taxes on yourself then yes you can receive unemployment if you declare yourself unemployed. I specialized in employment law for 8 years, I have some knowledge how this works.

The previous unemployment program worked because it was simple. They now want to complicate it so much that no one will benefit until they have been evicted and gone bankrupt. Perhaps the timing is to get a Trump signed check in the mail the week before the vote. Nothing says "I love you" like a check in the mail.....

I just hope the poor voters who experience heartache from the Republicans failure to act, or acting in a stingy fashion, remember who was on their side on election day.
