Nebraskan gets jail time for 1,000 dead pigs

By Kevin Cole

A southeast Nebraska man told an Otoe County District Court judge that hundreds of pigs and other animals died on his farm last year because he “got lazy.”

John Maahs, 61, of Unadilla, Neb., was sentenced Tuesday to 20 months to four years in prison by Judge Randall Rehmeier after pleading no contest to felony animal cruelty.

Maahs has already paid $56,000 to Otoe County for the costs of cleaning up the piles of rotting carcasses found on his property in September 2011.

A courtroom observer said Maahs told Rehmeier he didn’t care for his animals because he was busy with his full-time job and “got lazy and didn’t take care of things at home.”

God, but I love that.

Prison and 15 years banned from having animals? *gets out my checklist*

Property destroyed? Check.
Prison, and a felony record? Check.
15 years unable to have animals? Checkety-check-check.
10% of the animals rescued? That's domino, motherfucker.

Justice finally caught up with just us. Well done!

It's a nice dog,and it lives alone in a locked building, with no electricity. It angers everyone in town, to know that as long as the owner comes and feeds the dog every week, there is nothing sheriff's deputies or the humane society can do.
