when a white haired lady stopped to comment. I braced for what was coming. After all, I'm in southwest Arkansas and am seriously outnumbered.
To my surprise, she proceeded to tell me what a danger Trump is to the country. Turns out, her daughter lives in Portland and has been attending the protests.
Suddenly, I feel less outnumbered.

(149,620 posts)Maybe she'd felt outnumbered too, until she saw your sign. How lovely that she stopped to talk to you.
TomSlick
(11,098 posts)I've seen her out walking before. We exchange "good evenings" but she has never before stopped to talk.
The sign paid for itself its first day in the yard.

(11,098 posts)We do not know the identity of the "officer," the agency to which the "officer" belongs, or even if he really is an "officer."
We have paramilitary forces on the streets for whom we cannot identify the "officer," the agency (if any) or the mission. This way lies fascism.

(11,098 posts)We have people in camouflage with no insignia. We have no idea who they are. There are reports the federal marshal service is "deputizing" people who are not federal law enforcement. We cannot know if they are from some other federal agency, Erik Prince's thugs, or right-wing militias.
What is obvious is that these "officials" are either not trained law enforcement or law enforcement happy to ignore their training. Either way, it's scary as hell.
When one of these "officials" beats-down a peaceful protester, the victim has know way to know against whom to file their lawsuit. DHS will be free to ignore all knowledge concerning the assailant.

(11,098 posts)Yes, the Congress needs to get to the answers.
However, if these paramilitary thugs come to a city near you, join the protests. This is no time to do nothing.

(11,949 posts)I love the piney woods.
Did you know that before FDR all that country was open land with small farms and share croppers?
I was born in the mid 60s but when my dad was a boy in the 30s that was wide open, unfenced farmland. They could take their horses for miles and never run into large woods. He and my grandfather told me about busting 20 quail coveys a day!
My maternal grandfather born in 04 remembered seeing Ivory Billed Woodpeckers and Red Wolves in the bottoms. I remember him saying it was a sin we killed them all. He dropped out of school after 3rd grade but was self educated and dont doubt he was a genius. All 5 of his kids are worth over a million dollars. Hell, they did not get power till mother was in high school in the 50s. Because of the REA.
He cleared a farm where Lake Earling now sits. Im guessing you know where that is located.
I cant bring myself to hate all of those rural trump supporters like so many on DU do. I understand why they do and am not offended. But I guarantee you if a liberal friend of mind broke down on the interstate south of Hot Springs I could call my trump voting uncle and he would drive up there and help.
People are complicated. My family knows Im a Social Democrat and we have folks come to deer camp just to spar with me. Its like they welcome hearing a view they are never exposed to.
If it were within 30 miles of the gulf I could retire there.
Havent seen too many of your posts lately. Miss them. Of course Ive cut back as well. We know what we have to do and I just dont see the need to pile in on the outrage posts.
Have a great weekend.

(11,098 posts)I have seen pictures of pine boles from the Gurdon and Fordyce area, one section of which would fill a log truck.

(5,309 posts)showing Biden within striking distance of trump. In a pure red state like AR, if the polls are tightening here, you know he's losing it big time in swing states, as the polls confirm.
But still, I can't be complacent. I won't feel confident until November Fourth.

My memory is poor but I'm thinking of a story of an old country store, maybe outside of Camden, where pols would gather around election time for stump speeches. And, I believe a young fellow named Bill visited there a few times.
Don't recall the name of the store but I think they had big cookouts there, too.
I miss eating at the catfish buffet restaurants along with a fair share of Louisiana cooking in that area as well. I have a lot of fond memories from those jobs and had help from a good bunch of hard working, skilled maintenance folk.

(146,308 posts)because the supermarket where I shop has put big "MASK REQUIRED" signs on the entry doors. The Trumpeters won't shop there now, at least for a while. It's a mandate by our fine Democratic Governor.
Peace at last.
TomSlick
(11,098 posts)For the first time almost everyone was wearing masks.
I saw one family - with children - not wearing masks. There were a few masks below the nose. A fewer with the mask under the chin. Most were complying.
I suppose the Arkansas Governor's mandate is being generally obeyed. It was truly amazing.

(296 posts)live in a small city within fifty miles of Atlanta, GEORGIA. My Spouse works at a Major Liquor Store in the area with a mix of Democratic and Republican customers. Recently more and more of the Trump supporters from 2016 are having second thoughts and are not shy to say so. Some are saying they are going to vote for Biden. And recently Biden is pulling ahead here in the polls.

(7,349 posts)I loved the 5 years my family lived in the Ouchita Mountains! We moved back up North, but my parents remained in that area, giving us a good reason to visit often. Now that theyve both passed, that reason no longer remains. I miss Arkansas!

(11,468 posts)And see no Biden signs but one neighbor on my dog walk quite a few blocks away has two Trump signs with a circle and line through it like NOT! One of them hangs upside down. Got to give them for courage.
On our way by the house today a car stopped and 4 people with masks got out and were walking down the street all older women but looked like the conservative ones around here. I heard one say I love the signs and the others agreed.

(18 posts)Who controls what legislation moves forward and what doesn't?
If Hillary had won in 2016, which of her legislative goals would have moved forward?
If Biden wins Nov 3, his AG must move on investigating all Russian deals and payoff. The legislative logjam has one key element...remove that element and the flood of corrective legislation can move forward.

Our sub division has no signs up save for a Bernie sign thats been up for over a year. Got my Joe sign and put it up. My next door neighbor who is moving is a Trumpster, he took his kids to the open Michigan protests at the Capital. Decent guy, but glad hes moving.
Neighbor across the street is a nice older lady with a black lab. Her lab was off leash and charged our Am. Staff terrier and bit her on the shoulder where she had just had surgery for a cancerous tumor. Our dog isnt friendly with other dogs so she bit the other dog in the throat and did some minor damage that needed stitches. First time we met this lady after living here for 3 years. She was upset her dog got hurt, but knew it was her fault for no leash. Not a great start.
So the day we put our sign up, she comes over very friendly and bubbly. Shes so relieved to see the sign in our neighborhood that she couldnt contain her joy. Super nice lady I found out is a retired school teacher. Made a new friend.
