Mitt Romney is one of Donald Trumps biggest Republican critics on Capitol Hill. Hes the only GOP senator who voted to convict the president for abuse of power earlier this year, and he regularly calls Trump out on policy and personal conduct.
Yet the Utah lawmaker, who was his partys presidential standard-bearer in 2012, believes Trump is likely to win reelection this November.
Asked why he foresees that outcome, especially with most public polls showing Trump trailing badly behind presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, Romney offered three reasons.
There are enormous advantages to being the incumbent, number one, Romney told HuffPost on Thursday. Number two, I think [Trump] will tack more towards the middle in his communication than he has so far.
And number three, I think the voters that are most animated in opposition to the president tend not to come out to vote ― and thats young people and the minorities. Theyre active in polls, but not necessarily active at actually getting out to the polls, the senator said.

Number 4 Mittens Romney is delusional.
COVID-19, the economy and Billy Barr's storm troopers are not going to help Hair Fuehrer no matter how moderate he trends. Not with 4 months left.

Romney is right. If the Ds and Joltin' Joe are lackadaisical, we will lose. I don't think for a moment we will, but we have to do EVERYTHING possible to stop Trump's winning. GOTV is the #1 thing that all of us can do at a microlevel.

(7,860 posts)Mitt Romney, the guy who lost to Obama and Biden for that matter, said he thinks Trump will win?...Ok, now in what was once considered a normal election cycle Romney's three points might give one pause but this is not a normal election cycle...this is the obscenity of Trump and his pandemic...relax...Biden's got this..
DonaldsRump
(7,715 posts)You're clueless if you are willing to give this election to chance. You do understand that folks besides persons who are allowed to vote in US elections are interfering in this election? You do recall what happened in 2016?
If you are not willing to fight for every vote, you're probably not really committed.

(1,351 posts)Nowhere did I see agingdem say he/she was willing to give this election up to chance. I also didnt see him/her suggest that they werent willing to fight for every vote. What I DID see was a suggestion that Dems relax and dont go into panic mode. And I agree.
You can be determined and maintain a positive outlook while still not taking the election for granted. I find worry to be draining. I need all my energy to fight to make sure Trump is defeated. So am I going to waste energy worrying over what Mitt Romney thinks? No. Now, if all of a sudden polls started going south for Biden, then yesIll allow myself some worry.

(1,351 posts)You mean run around and yell the sky is falling? because Mitt Romney predicted Trump would win? Sorry, Ill stick to keeping my eye on the ball.
Dont presume that just because someone says they arent worried about what Mitt Romney thinkswhich is what this thread is aboutthat somehow means they arent working as hard as they can to make sure Trump is defeated.
You wanna worry about Mitt? Go ahead. Meanwhile I have my local get out the vote zoom meeting to prepare for.

(7,715 posts)Any sane and committed person wanting Biden to win would fight. You seem to be happy to relax.
You, and the other poster, seem to love the "chicken little" analogy. I have no care whatsoever about what Mitt Romney, the "chicken little" poster, or you seem to think. This is a battle for the US.
Have fun with your "chicken little" analogy!

(1,351 posts)Once again, the subject matter at hand is Mitt Romney predicting Trump will win and what significance that has. My stance is who cares what Mitt Romney thinks, lets keep our eye on the ball, which you keep conflating to being blasé about the 2020 election in total.
Geez, once again Im reminded of the comment someone made on this board when everyone was having the same freak outs over Obamas chances in 2008. (Obama himself was telling people to chill out).
The comment was about the differences between Republicans and Democrats. Tell a Republican about a poll where their candidate does poorly and they want to kill you. Tell a Democrat the same and they will want to kill themselves. Its so true!
I refuse to go forward in fear, there is just too much of that right now. I choose to go forward with hope and determination.
DonaldsRump
(7,715 posts)There is absolutely no fear. The issue is to keep fighting. If we don't fight, we'll lose, as the Republicans' sole strategy is voter suppression, gerrymandering, dirty tricks etc.
There is no fear: the issue is that there is no complacency.

(7,860 posts)I understand exactly what's going on...we Democrats are very often our own worst enemy, the party of "nice", but not this election..when BLM took to the streets we stopped being the party of "nice"..do I think Biden in the White House is a sure thing...no, but, this election is about revenge...revenge for Russian interference, revenge for our diminished standing in the world, revenge for the White House as trump's personal ATM, revenge for trump's attempt to normalize racial and ethnic hatred, and revenge for a pandemic that destroyed lives and turned our world upside down..I don't take one vote for granted but with all the garbage trump and his sycophants are throwing around like monkeys throwing poop I feel a change coming...for once we have to stop with the pearl clutching and project positive...who gives a damn what mitt thinks!
DonaldsRump
(7,715 posts)This is a fight for the US. If you think this is some gentlemen's game of chess, it's not.
There is absolutely no time or reason to relax between now and November 3.

(7,715 posts)I'm also a PoC. And I happen to be a lawyer.
All of us need to fight like hell. Our lives, and those of our families and friends and fellow Americans depend on it. Phrases like "chicken little" and "pearl clutching" have no relevancy. This is a fight for eternity.
I HAVE NO FEAR. I ALSO HAVE NO COMPLACENCY.
crimycarny

DonaldsRump
(7,715 posts)You can relax. Not the rest of us who care.
This is a fight for the soul of the US, and if you want to "relax", go to Corpus Christi or Miami Beach, and relax all you want.
The rest of us will fight, not "relax".

(1,351 posts)Everyone is spooked by what happened in 2016. This isnt 2016. First of all, though Trump was so obviously a con man and liar, he seemed innocuous to many. I think a lot of people thought hed be a figurehead and life would go on as normal. That narrative has certainly been laid bare.
Then you had the irrational anti-Hillary phenomena (which I still dont understand).
2020 is a whole different ball game. Based on what happened in 2016, NO one is going to take 2020 for granted. That being said I wont breathe easy until its over which is why I cant waste energy worrying about some random headline like Mitt Romney predicting a Trump win. Mitt Romney, the same guy who was so sure he was going to win in 2012 that he didnt even write a concession speech. Yeah, not going to lose much sleep over a Mitt Romney prediction.

(7,860 posts)2020 Trump is a catastrophe ... and his PR machine can send in the clowns to all media outlets to translate, gaslight and defend trump's vicious verbal diarrhea but the optics don't lie... he's stupid, depraved, greedy and cruel...he's emotionally stunted and criminally insane...he's hates with a red-hot passion but Trump's hatred is not limited to "the other"..his brand of hate extends to anyone who questions his authority, his veracity, and his mental stability..as a country we are palpably disgusted by his inhumane indifference to this pandemic and the horrendous loss of lives...he can have his moronic followers and his enablers in the senate and the house...this election cycle is different...we're different...we want calm...we want our house back...the White House

(1,351 posts)All of us are terrified at the prospect of Trump winning re-election, I dont think there is a person on this board who doesnt feel this election is likely one of the most important in our lifetimes. It truly feels like a fight to save our Democracy. The stakes have never been higher.
Because of the high stakes its more important than ever not to get distracted by things that dont matter, andin my opinionan outlier opinion of one man (Mitt Romney) falls into that category.
This election is NOT the same was 2016. Trump was untested at that time, thats not the case now. Now he has been tested and failed miserably. I think many Americans, of all political stripes, have been shocked by an erosion in our checks and balances that we never in a million years wouldnt have thought possible. No..this is not 2016. Do we still need to fight like hell? Yes. But that is all the more reason to pick our battles and not get side-tracked.

(15,751 posts)'Former Vice President Joe Biden is closing the gap between himself and President Donald Trump on the economy, with a new poll putting the pair at a statistical tie on the key election issue.
The latest survey from Morning Consult found that 44 percent of voters trusted Trump more on the economy, while 43 percent said the same of Biden, putting the president's lead within the poll's 2-point margin of error.
When the same poll was conducted last month, Trump had a 4-point lead over his Democratic challenger, down by half from his 8-point lead on the economy in April.' 7-23--2020, Newsweek.
That being said, Romney's conclusion may be trashed here, but Romney's 3 points are viable points.
Remember, too, that republicon voters overwhelmingly [somehow] think trump is good at the economy
[My personal opinion is that the economy, school openings, virus and virus bungles, and trump himself - will all get markedly , more dire].

(1,697 posts)Everyone I know is anxious to get it out of office. We have a whole lot more to lose.
Romney is just justifying his loss to President Obama. It is easier for him to accept being at a disadvantage running against the incumbent and losing instead of just being the inferior candidate.

Now, we should push to GOTV as if Joe were as far behind as he is ahead, but let's not imbue Mittens with more perceptiveness than he's shown already.
After all, remember the Chinese factory story in the 47% video? The bit about the fence being to keep clamoring workers out rather than oppressed workers in?
Much like Trump, he simply believed what the salesman told him. Never accept the "wisdom" of a Republican "businessman politician."

(11,257 posts)Mitt lost in 2012 because Obama was a better candidate. Certainly Obama benefited from his incumbency, but Mitt has to overstate that advantage to convince himself that it was the only reason he lost.

For 2020 they are focused on destroying USPS before the election and limiting voting locations/ times/ dates. They are spending our tax dollars on fake senate hearings to put Biden in a bad light...like they did with Hillary (although they worked on the destruction of Hillary for decades). They know they cannot win fairly.
They are dismantling out rule of law, and have gutted our democracy.
It is time to head to the streets. Oh, wait...they are attempting to limit that with an undemocratic attack on our citizens.
