"SNIP.......
Ron Brownstein: On one front, Trump is taking his confrontational approach toward big cities to an ominous new level by deploying federal law-enforcement officials to Portland and potentially other locales over the objection of local officials
On the other, Republican governors, especially but not exclusively across the Sun Belt, have repeatedly blocked mostly Democratic local leaders from locking down their communities, despite exploding caseloads in cities from Atlanta to Phoenix.
The common thread in these twin confrontations is that they pit Republican officials who rely on support primarily from exurban, small-town, and rural voters against major metropolitan areas that favor Democrats. In the process, these RepublicansTrump in particularmay be hoping to rally their non-urban voter base by defining themselves explicitly in opposition to the cities. Trump is likely to underscore that message in his White House speech this afternoon on combating violent crime in American cities.'

(67,108 posts)Americans are not used to this and many likely think it will just go away. Trump is testing how far he can go.

Divisive comments by Trump aid Putin
Since well before the 2016 election theyve been differentiating their message, separately targeting the left and the right in the United States with inflammatory rhetoric and fake-news messages, repeatedly employing the term civil war.
That serves the Kremlins ultimate goal to weaken the United States to the point where it gives up its global leadership just as the U.S. intelligence services have warned us.
Mr. Putin believes that would make his position and stature inside and outside of Russia more secure.
The main tools the Kremlin has relied upon in promoting that message in the United States are its official television channel Russia Today and social media.

(2,248 posts)Honestly. He wants us all at each other's necks so we're not paying attention to or talking about his presidential record or treachery.
For TWO years, Trump had Senate and House under his control. His "accomplihments" during that time? The uppermost 1% and corporate tax cut and sailing through two Supreme Court justices (which I think they even had to initially change the rules to make happen).
For the last year-and-a-half, it's ONLY been federal judges approved in Senate and nothing else.
He rode in on general peace troughout the world and an economy that was on the rise year-after-year for eight years prior.
He's running like someone else has been in charge when he's had A LOT of levers to pull. Yet, nothing.
His recent flurry of "beautiful" things to come in the next two weeks is a joke. Amazing how much activity (empty promises) have happened here since COVID broke his spell.
