(26,263 posts)It's incomprehensible that anyone would get that close to any wild animal. Especially one with a reputation like the Bison have.
When we were at Yellowstone, a man approached a bison to get a close up. The Bison rocketed up and forward, caught him mid-section, and that was the end of that man. And it happened in front of his family.

(16,065 posts)Bison can run at speeds approaching 35 mph which is as fast as a horse. And they are also extremely agile, able to turn quickly and jump high fences. So do not approach bison view them from the safety of your vehicle. Humps Male bison can weigh as much as a ton.

(58,785 posts)dirt road in northern Colorado, he stopped near a little bison family who were quietly eating and started walking closer and closer, and closer than those women, as they continued to stay still. I hadn't been driving, and since we were from L.A., just wandering the west, I had no idea even what direction to take his trampled body for help. Which I asked him among the rest of my hollering. He wouldn't do it now that he no longer has another 60 years to lose.

(184 posts)I'm glad she is okay. Playing dead was the smart thing to do, unlike getting too close for a photo.
I love nature and especially photographing animals in the wild. However, there is a reason I have an ultra zoom lens. When we were in the Rockies last summer, we came across a moose and her calf headed to the lake to drink. A park ranger told everyone to stay back and not to interfere with the two, as the mother would do anything necessary to protect her baby. Of course, a few folks ignored his warning and tried to get close to snap photos. Fortunately, nothing went wrong. Still, things that make you go hmmm..
People are interesting. We also went to the Grand Canyon last summer and a few weeks before we arrived a woman fell to her death because she was trying to get a selfie of her leaning over the canyon.
While we were at the Grand, we notice many folk ignoring the signs and climbing over the fenced areas to get closer views. I looked at my sister and we just shook our heads. The risks people take.
