General Discussion

The gun nuts are saying that they are going to put a 50% tax on ammo and limit sales to 200 rounds, eliminate assault weapons and
high capacity magazines. The gun shops are sold out of handgun, AK ammo and assault weapons. A guy that
works at McDonald's said this morning he had bought $360 in ammo. How do you work at McDonald's and
spend $360 on ammo? From what I heard a local gun dealer/range operator is the one spreading the rumor.
These Trump idiots are arming themselves for a civil war I guess.

(54,770 posts)groups, gun-humpers, etc., promote fear and hysteria.
I remember back when President Obama won the election. The right wingers were buying up guns and stockpiling them because the "knew" they would need them to defend themselves.
Four years later I started seeing ads selling those assault type weapons, and the ammo to go with the weapons. What amazed me is some of them said the weapon had never been fired, and still in the original box.
The NRA has used fear for years to get the sales of guns up, and it works. A lot of the gun nuts like to play "army", even though they have never been in the military, and would never sign up. Of course there is that "bone spur guy"...!

(18,663 posts)I do occasionally visit "gun nut" forums but have not seen such claims.
I was at our Fleet Farm today, their handgun ammo shelves would normally have hundreds of boxes of ammo. Today they had 3 boxes. I have noticed handgun ammo has been picked over for months.
How did you get into a conversation with a McDonald's worker about how much ammo he buys?

(35,348 posts)him. They were saying a local gun dealer was telling everyone about it, I don't know where the hell it
comes from I am guessing Facebook.

(18,663 posts)Extra paranoid person on FB. I see the usual warnings about electing a Democrat who will then try to ban certain weapons but even that seems to be half hearted lately.
Interestingly I have seen near universal condemnation of the Saint Louis couple standing in front of their house waving guns at protesters. Even the gun nuts seem to think that was over the top.

(2,097 posts)That's hysterical. Did none of them think, hmm... maybe he's just trying to up his sales.

(35,348 posts)they say was the manufacturers switched all their production to handgun and AR ammo. Another claim
was Obama was buying it all up. But they believe Trump when he says the military didn't have ammo when he
"took over". I saw steel drums of AR ammo with like 10000 rounds for sale then.

(2,971 posts)50% tax on ammo: There is such a bill. It won't pass (in this session):

Limit sales to 200 rounds: Prohibit individuals from possessing ammunition in amounts greater than 200 rounds per caliber or gauge., proposed by Eric Swalwell. Not happening:

Eliminate assault weapons and high capacity magazines: Suggested with slightly varying details by Swalwell, O'Rourke, and Biden.

(2,971 posts)expect prices on ammunition and (especially) assault weapons and high capacity magazines to skyrocket to levels never seen. I don't think a bill requiring a buyback of such items will pass, but we could easily get one banning the manufacture of new ones, and possibly also banning the sale of ones already owned.
Back in the 1990's when the Assault Weapons Ban was in effect, the manufacture on new AW's and hi-cap mags (for civilians) was banned, but onee previously owned were grandfathered and could still be sold. Glock magazines that held 17 rounds which sold for $15 in 1993 went for $150 in 1999. A "post-ban" AR-15 could go for $600, but a "pre-ban" version would sell for $1500 or more.
If a bill banning the sale of grandfathered guns and magazines is passed, I anticipate magazines selling for many hundreds apiece and the guns themselves for multiple thousands in the time between its passage and enactment.

(35,348 posts)for the rich to own all the guns and ammo they want. That would prohibit the average person from owning a gun.. The rich have bought up all the land and made private hunting clubs. So now they raise the cost so the average person can't afford to own a gun. I will not vote for anyone that would support that bill.

(19,253 posts)Depending on caliber. 9mm and 5.56mm is cheaper, .308 more expensive.
I could burn that up in 2-3 months, if I'm hitting the range a few times a month.
