just to see how quickly Trump reverses his position on renaming it.
Besides, Trump is just a synonym for brag anyway
WALLACE: But the military says theyre for this.
TRUMP: excuse me, excuse me. I dont care what the military says. I do Im supposed to make the decision. Fort Bragg is a big deal. We won two World Wars, nobody even knows General Bragg. We won two World Wars. Go to that community where Fort Bragg is, in a great state, I love that state, go to the community, say how do you like the idea of renaming Fort Bragg, and then what are we going to name it
Were going to name it after the Reverend Al Sharpton? What are you going to name it, Chris, tell me what youre going to name it? So theres a whole thing here. We won two World Wars, two World Wars, beautiful World Wars that were vicious and horrible, and we won them out of Fort Bragg, we won out of all of these forts that now they want to throw those names away.
And, no, Im against that, and you know what, most other people are. And I even I dont believe in polls because I see the fakest polls Ive ever seen, but that poll is a 64 percent thing, which actually surprised me. We won World Wars out of these military bases. No, Im not going to go changing them, Im not going to go changing them.
WALLACE: So youll veto them?
TRUMP: I might. Yeah, I might.

(13,903 posts)I know it is profane but is it really anymore profane than naming it after a racist traitor.

(2,199 posts)and I love Bragg. That is where most of my best Army memories are tied to that installation. Assigned there multiple times over 38 years of service. Plus NC has been my home for all my life. For years I've hated military installations that were named after Confederate Leaders. NC is my home and when I tell the kids in my history classes that Ft Bragg is named after a Confederate General, most don't care, but many wonder why the Army named a place for a guy who lost a war....was a traitor etc....my response is Jim Crow, then explain that chapter of American History. I shudder thinking about City, State or National government buildings/schools named after Trump.....what a nightmare. By the way trumpster, most of us here in NC hate your guts you cowardly Dotard.

(50,560 posts)General Matthew Ridgway was:
Commanding General, 82nd Airborne Division, 1942-1944
Commanding General, XVIII Airborne Corps, 1944 until the end of the war
Commanding General, 8th US Army in Korea until MacArthur got fired
Supreme Commander of all US Forces in Korea until the armistice was signed, and also Military Governor of Japan
Supreme Allied Commander Europe after General Eisenhower left
Chief of Staff of the United States Army
He's also the officer who desegregated all 8th Army units, which led to all Army units worldwide being desegregated. And he wasn't a REMF - he went to the field frequently in combat uniform and with a rifle, and demanded his subordinate officers do the same.
Braxton Bragg was best known for being a complete asshole; he was probably the worst officer in the whole Confederate Army. (It turns out the story about Bragg serving as both company commander and supply officer and rejecting his own supply requests was made up...it also turns out he would have done that if he'd have thought of it.) Matthew Ridgway was the best officer you've never heard of - that, and the fact he's got ties to the base because his picture is on the Wall of Honor of two different major units, make him the right man to name that base after.
