JFK is full of conspiracy theories but it's well done; Nixon was really good, got a number of Oscar nominations, and Anthony Hopkins was great. I haven't seen much of his later stuff.

His movie Salvador (1986) serves as a reference for anyone who is new to the bloody conflict in that country during the early 1980s. One disturbing sequence in the film recounts the rape and murder of four missionaries (three Maryknoll Sisters and one non-member of the order). The film accurately shows an official of the then-Republican U.S. administration trying to undercut the horror of the atrocity by publicly stating, ridiculously, that the victims were "pistol-packing."

I rewatched those recently, and personally I think they are remarkable portraits of their respective subjects. His later films are way too self-indulgent for my tastes.

I rate him a great big "meh." Not an important filmmaker, not a very nice person, not a great thinker.
