Trump's campaign to paint Biden as mentally unfit becomes a gamble

WASHINGTON – Less than four months from the November election, President Donald Trump's attacks on presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden's mental fitness are an integral part of the president's re-election message: the focus of television advertisements, talking points and open challenges from the president.

But analysts have raised questions over whether Trump’s strategy of focusing on the former vice president's age is backfiring with a key demographic – seniors.

Making it an even riskier play, the attacks have heightened expectations for Trump's debate performances this fall and invited skepticism about his own fitness. The strategy itself has proven difficult to execute as Biden campaigns from his home in Delaware, limiting the gaffe-prone candidate's opportunities for flubs.

For months, Biden, 77, has dismissed the name calling and innuendo but more recently he’s hitting back more forcefully and trying to turn the argument about mental fitness back on the 74-year-old Trump.

You can’t listen to 30 minutes of talk radio without some mention of Joe having dementia or not being able to tie his own shoes or drooling or being locked in his basement like he’s ....well I haven’t heard “retarded” yet but that’s right around the corner.

It’s bad. Trust me.

and in this case (Biden vs. rump), it's patently false. Biden clearly outweighs rump by any mental measure one can come up. If anything, the PINO comes up w/ daily crap that leaves many to question PINO's mental state constantly. Incompetent is the word I come up w/.

Chances are Joe Biden's going to make at least one gaffe during the debates, hopefully it's a minor one.

Ain't no fuckin' way on this Earth that Trump is going to debate anyone, let alone Joe Biden. He is barely coherent as it is, and he is getting visibly worse every day. Every one of his appearances is very carefully stage managed, and they can no longer hide how far out to lunch he is.

He will come up with some bizarre debate condition that there is no way Biden would agree to, like having a debate on OANN with Laura Ingraham moderating. And when Biden declines, he will pull out of the whole series saying that Joe is too much of a pussy to debate him. And that will end it.

expect there to be at least one debate. After Trump loses it, he will indeed come up with a pretense to cancel participation in any further such activity, but I don't see how he wiggles off the hook for the first one.

Trump is delusional enough to believe he can win against Joe Biden in a debate. He has been chomping at the bit to debate Biden because he is so used to his BS working for him. Also, Trump is sliding so low in the polls, what else do they have to try? There will be a debate, of that I’m sure.

Joe Biden has to speak flawlessly or the media labels it a gaffe. Everyone stumbles over a word or makes a mistake when speaking (like mixing up a date or name) but since Joe has been labeled a “gaffe machine” he is held to a higher standard than anyone else.

Just look at the outright BIZARRE things Trump says (like claiming airports were shut down during 1776 war of independence). But that’s shrugged off by the media whereas Biden saying a single thing awkwardly, that gets plastered all over media.

Makes for “good copy” I guess but frustrating as h*ll.

we get to see the stark difference in the cognitive abilities of the two men every day. Trump is not only ignorant, he is also mean-hearted; a real winning combination. The ignorance and meanness is the big draw for his supporters...birds of a feather.
