GA-05: Georgia Democrats scramble to replace John Lewis on 2020 ballot before Monday deadline

Democrats in Georgia are mourning the passing of civil rights leader John Lewis, who passed away on Friday.

But they also have to contend with legal deadlines to fill his seat in Congress and on the ballot.

“Facing a tight legal deadline, Georgia Democrats are seeking online applications to succeed the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis. The state party said Saturday that potential applicants must complete an application by Sunday evening to be considered for the seat,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday.

“That’s because state law gives the Democratic Party of Georgia until 4:30 p.m. on Monday to replace Lewis’ name on the November ballot,” the newspaper explained. “Sachin Varghese, the party’s general counsel, said it was an effort to honor Lewis’ legacy while ‘working within the applicable legal framework.'”

The candidate selected by the Democratic Party for the November election will face Republican Angela Stanton-King, who spent two years in prison after a 2004 conviction on federal conspiracy charges. She was pardoned by President Donald Trump the same day he pardoned “junk bond king” Michael R. Milken and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

It was the immediate first thought I had of who would be a fantastic and appropriate person to replace John Lewis and represent the citizens of the Georgia 5th District and Atlanta (Georgia’s biggest city) and the citizens of Georgia and frankly the United States and become a law maker in Congress that continues his work on voting rights and so much more including what she has been working on for so long.

Just my thoughts...

on another thread for this and a reply stated that Abrams didn't want to do anymore legislative work.

So we'll see.. Best of Luck to Georgia's Dem Candidate to replace our National Hero, John Lewis.

And she might realize - this is THE moment.

With her work around voting rights - she could take it to the next level.

I apologize to those who might feel it's crass to turn to electoral matters so soon after Rep. Lewis's death, but Georgia law does not give the party much time to grieve.

Rep. Lewis had a cancer that kills 95% of people within 3 years of contracting it. The great man was a good person, I am sure that if someone had sat and talked to him about him drawing up a list of local democrats who he would like to replace him in case, he likely would have done that. Then that list could have been narrowed down to one person.
