'Overwhelmed and Terrified': Las Vegas' Reopening Backfires Terribly

https://www.thedailybeast.com/las-vegas-casino-reopening-backfires-as-covid-19-surges-in-nevada?ref=home

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to pummel the United States, Las Vegas seems to be operating business as usual. Casinos have been open since June 4—undeterred by the 123 visitors who have tested positive for the highly contagious virus and the 51-year-old Caesars employee who died in late June.

But it’s not business as usual for doctors and nurses in Las Vegas’ besieged health-care system, who say they are “overwhelmed and terrified” about the massive influx of new cases in a state officially deemed a “red zone” by the White House.

“I would say in the last month we’ve been completely overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients and our hospital is running out of space,” one Las Vegas emergency room doctor, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of professional retaliation, told The Daily Beast on Friday. “Not only are we overwhelmed and terrified, but based on the numbers for the rest of the country, it’s only going to get worse for us.”

One of the states to loosen coronavirus restrictions in May, Nevada has set records for new cases throughout July. The rate of new cases per 100,000 residents is higher than the national average, putting Nevada in the top ten states for cases per capita—alongside Florida, now the epicenter of the pandemic, Arizona and Texas.

The casinos are just doing what they do. I’ve had a blast both times I’ve been but that was my choice as is how much to gamble.

as people from all over go there and do what it is they do. People from places like - Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, the kind of places which are having a slight problem with COVID.

That is exactly how they look at it. Kids murdered in school shootings and these folks are just throwaways to the christofascists.

They said mask usage was near 100% in the Casino they stayed at and in the ones they visited on the Strip. Said mask usage was a little less in the casino's downtown, but still the vast majority had them on. Fremont street itself was bad though they said. Most quit wearing masks, the heat wasn't helping, they said it was still around 99 at like 11pm. Also zero distancing, lots of people crowding around the street performers. They didn't stick around long on Fremont street. Said they felt much better at Aria and Bellagio, where security was everywhere to enforce compliance.

How many people played that slot machine before you?

How close are you to how many different people in an evening of gambling?

What percentage of casino goers are not observing basic hygiene procedures?

Ever eat at a giant buffet?

How many people before you have handled that cash you just put in your pocket?

I certainly hope that all are well and safe. Greed and the iffy chances of winning big in Vegas I guess are worth the odds, to some, eh?

I certainly don't think so. They're reopened the casino (River City) here in STLMO, and somewhat limited the machines available to play, etc., but how does one wipe down all of the tokens after each use, wipe down each machine after every player's turn, etc.? And to top it off, most of the persons who go into this casino are retired and/or elderly, just what the doctor called for, eh?

I think I'd rather play a game online instead of in person, if I want to gamble so badly.
