1. This is Trump trying to provoke a reaction

Whether that reaction is violent or not, it will be used as a pretext for more federal law enforcement troops to be deployed. He's picking on Portland because Oregon is lost to him in November, and he's playing for votes in Ohio and Iowa, as Gov. Brown perceptively pointed out.

7. What is happening with tRump and the federal agents he brought in

is clearly unacceptable.

However in the back drops the rioting and vandalism that ocurred in Portland including at federal building that had a fire set it in it is at center stage. That building has basically been under attack for 50 + days on nearly a nightly basis. This problem should have been descalated weeks ago.
The organizers of the protests do not condone the violence and destruction that had ocuured. In recent weeks they have closed down their rallies that ended with massive crowds and marches in the early evening and said we are done. Don't leave here and commit acts of violence or destruction in our name.

I watched a live stream last night. It is a tray filled with pepper spray. It can release large amounts without leaving canisters to identify gas used. Prob toxic.
