By Sarah Rumpf
Canada has turned away over 10,000 Americans from crossing the border since the coronavirus pandemic began in March, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and almost half that number intended to go shopping, sightseeing, or other forms of recreation.
As the pandemic began in mid-March, Canada closed its borders to foreigners, and had originally exempted U.S. residents from the restrictions. That only lasted a few days, and the country closed its borders to all non-essential travel, with exemptions for trade and commerce, vital health care workers like nurses, and other essential foreign workers who live and work on opposite sides of the border. An additional exemption exists for Americans wishing to travel through Canada in order to reach Alaska, but authorities have been cracking down on those caught lingering in Canada too long as they make their way north.
Tourism and social visits remain invalid reasons for entry.
Nevertheless, out of the 10,329 American citizens who were turned away at the border between March 22 and July 12, 2,840 said they wanted to visit Canada for tourism or sightseeing, 1,333 gave other recreational reasons, and 583 said they wanted to go shopping, CTVNews.ca reported.

(86,840 posts)The point I was making is that these folks seem to think rules don't apply to them. That is the exceptionalism part.

(6,477 posts)Tens of millions of Americans have been spending the last four-five years cheering for a man whose only solution to any problem is to "Build a Wall." They've chanted it and laughed at people over it. They've skipped over Bible verses on hospitality for the Other. And now, they get the high hat. Of course, we're right there with them, but there's a justice to it nevertheless. Now YOU're not welcome. Sit with that.

(1,089 posts)My wife is from Vancouver and is a dual citizen, as are all 3 of my children. I'm the only non-citizen in the family. She's up there right now finishing her quarantine, and she's just signed a lease on a house for the rest of the year. I'm flying my kids up there next weekend, flying back down here to SoCal the same day and then loading up our dogs and driving there the following morning.
We can get in because of the citizenship (and me because I'm next-of-kin and a guardian to 3 citizens) and because we are going to help take care of my in-laws, who need it badly. I'm incredibly grateful to have that opportunity. My kids will go to school there, we can go to a freaking park if we want to and we won't have to worry about COVID for the most part.
The only thing I'm making sure of is that my absentee ballot arrives on time to get the Orange Shitstain out of office. Honestly, the election will determine how long we're staying there.
