I had an early afternoon errand run and me and my tomato mask went to a nearby small post office (town with the great name of Horse Shoe, NC!). Noted it was pretty busy - meaning half a dozen people in line, all separated by 6 feet, all masked.
An older woman came in with a few boxes and headed for the front of the line. I somewhat politely said that we were all in line but responsibly distanced and suggested she join the line (she did not have a mask). She yelled at me - and all of us, I guess - "COVID is a hoax - you are all just being stupid". I couldn't help myself and said "well, try telling that to the families of the more than 130,000 people who died from it". She snapped back "it's all a lie - they are reporting all deaths as COVID deaths". I just shook my head in disbelief and decided to not dig into this any further. A woman behind me said "I lost friends and have family members that are compromised" - at that, the unmasked avenger took her packages and left in a huff.
When I got the window, I told the woman that she just missed a "COVID is a Hoax" customer and fortunately they left. She said that such a reaction was not uncommon....we actually have a sheriff in our county (Henderson County) that will not enforce the mask guidelines set out by our Democratic Governor, Roy Cooper.
So, I am no longer a COVID Hoax spewing by a trump asshole virgin. What a clusterfuck our country is right now. And we know why.

(82,849 posts)A second person speaks up, and the fools retreat. Good for you for speaking up first. Good for the woman behind you for backing you up, which got the nincompoop to leave.

(149,737 posts)You had more presence of mind that I would have, under those circumstances!
And the country sure is a clusterfuck. I keep telling myself, "this too shall pass."
Sometimes I believe it.

(65,180 posts)I have a real estate agent friend who spouts much of what Dump And FAUX News say - but she has no problem wearing a mask! I can avoid politics, but I would draw the line at no mask wearing.

(22,758 posts)my exposure came yesterday... a man in front of me in line... same line... "it's all a hoax... the deaths are not really from Covid..."

(34,493 posts)similar comments on a thread today. I really did not expect to see as many as there were here. Fortunately the majority of commenters tried to set them straight, politely. It won't change their minds, I'm sure, but they need to be told the truth, so at the very least they can see they are not getting over on the majority of their neighbors.

(71 posts)I am right down the road from Horse Shoe and occasionally use that PO. Theres one several miles Down the road from there in Etowah that is our regular PO. All you need to do is read the conversations in the local NextDoor app to realize how many people foolishly believe that dangerous nonsense. Since March I have only left the house to go to doctors appointments after getting diagnosed with breast cancer March 20th. My elective surgery was delayed until the end of May because of foolish people like that lady and Im not the only one. My husband runs all the errands, only goes out early in AM or around 7 to the grocery store, comes home and changes his clothes in the basement. We wipe all groceries and the mail. Yesterday he left the store without several items because in one aisle a maskless man was yelling at his maskless daughter who was yelling back at him. This is the new normal we get to experience in our golden years.

(391 posts)and a dipshit makes a stupid comment, I just shake my head and say in my most solemn voice-
"That's exactly what my brother said right before he died from Covid."
Now my brother didn't really die of covid, but it works no matter what they say, and it damn sure shuts them up.

(21,819 posts)He was entering in front of me, and the clerk greeted him and informed him that as of next Monday they will not allow anyone in without a mask.
Guy: You can't do that. It's against Federal law.
Lady: This is private property and we can require masks.
Guy: I WILL be back here Monday! I WILL NOT wear a mask! And you WILL NOT STOP ME!
Then he strutted into the store like he'd just made the winning goal.

These individuals spouting off alone are seemingly among the braver of that type, but note that the majority are retreating as they do (including this guy as he moves into the store).

(22,176 posts)bullying. I too, am getting sick and tired of these thugs and bullies thinking that they are above the rest of us in knowledge and common sense when in fact, they're not. I think everyone is getting sick and tired of these loudmouths. Seems like they've all taken rump's style to heart and thus, all become idiots and loudmouths too.
Again, good for you in standing up for yourself and the others in your line. You give me energy and strength through your story.

(10,106 posts)Eventually, the virus will be brought under control, either because hundreds of thousands of people die or we finally get a vaccine that works, though it will most likely take at least two years to manufacture enough vaccine for everyone who wants it (the antivaxxers will just keep spreading the virus among themselves). But we will still have millions of people who choose to believe conspiracy theories, who believe only Fox News and hate radio, who think education is for sissies, who believe that science isnt true, and who want a strongman leader who hates minorities and women the same way they do.
I dont know how we build a country that is strong enough to hang onto a world leadership role (does anyone even think about how the US economy would be affected if the Euro or some other currency replaced the dollar as the worlds currency), while also investing in infrastructure and preparing people for the jobs of the next 50 years, not the jobs of the last 50 years. We have a significant population that wants to do nothing but obstruct change and progress. Every move forward will be bitterly fought.
