I treat a fair number of fighters here in Philly, and I know exactly what you mean. Many years ago I had a kid here whose father was influential in politics and he set up his son’s fights and the kid actually had a pretty good record. BUT....he went to the Olympic trials and somebody really tuned him up - this kid was never the same. One of the other fighters who i treat watched the bout and said that he had never seen anyone in that category hit as hard as this kid’s opponent.

There was definitely damage from this fight. I knew him from the time he was a child and it was as though someone shorted out one-third of his brain.

I remember as a teenager, a friend died in the ring in Syracuse. My brother and I had long fought on the same cards as he did. But as a teen, all I thought was, "Poor Frank," never seeing a connection.

Today, my brother is in a wheel chair, severely brain-damaged. Not from any one fight, but from all the rounds in the ring and gym. The human brain isn't made to take that type of punishment. I've had both my son and daughter that box visit him with me, to show them one of the harsh realities. But kids don't think it can happen to them.

I'd stopped training fighters because of this. But when my boy was intent upon boxing, I said he needed to do it right. For the past four years, each of the fighters I've trained have always made it to the finals of the NYS Golden Gloves, and won the title at least once. We are from a small hamlet in the middle of nowhere, but all of the old trainers -- my age! -- remember back in the 1970s, when our team was ranked the top in the state north of NYC.
