https://www.kake.com/story/42363720/states-plan-for-schools-coming-wednesday-wichita-school-district-decision-one-week-awaytucky Middle School teacher Pamela Dawson is anxiously awaiting the decision, and she thinks everyone should stay home.
"Even teachers that are worried about going back to school still love their kids and still need that contact, but our jobs shouldn't kill us," says Dawson.

(25,865 posts)You were articulate and on point.
I lived in Overland Park, KS, from 1990 to 2008, when, after a divorce, I moved to Santa Fe, NM. I actually ran for office, for the Kansas State House in 2004. I lost, alas, but it was an incredible experience, so much so that I'd actually encourage lots of people to run for office.
But I feel exceptionally fortunate that I was able to leave Kansas, even though there was a lot I liked about that state. It was a good place to raise my two sons. I still have friends and family back there, and visit semi-frequently. At this point, of course, I have no idea when I'll be back. But someday. Someday.

(14,492 posts)My daughter teaches 5th grade reading in a public school here (a large metro system) and she and around 2/3 of all our teachers do not want to hold regular classes this fall. Our school board held an on-line public hearing tonight and I'm anxious to hear from her how it worked out.
Thank you for helping to keep this in front of the public. I believe the more areas that announce they are not holding regular classes, many more will quickly follow.

(11,949 posts)I actually am on TV multiple times a year and am fed talking points by our media folks. You knocked it out of the ballpark.
When you explained you loved your kids you won the audience making them open to your final message. Thats the key. Win them over then drive home your point. If you have never done media before you totally nailed the bit all on your own.
Excellent job. You are are good at this.

(7,820 posts)you still made the essential points vividly and accurately. If you were shaking, I couldn't tell. Do you think your experience in the classroom helped prepare you for this encounter with the press? All those moments when student X just boiled over, and you coped with the student? I would have liked to hear the whole interview because you understand the subject so well.

(22,144 posts)words 'essential employee' or 'essential worker' really kind of overused and nauseating by local governmental bodies to force people back to work under uncertain times. Governments aren't the only ones demanding this either. It's other inconsiderate people too, who are missing their stupid haircuts and such other mundane services too.
My other half is in retail, and is classified as an 'essential worker' thus had to go to work while millions get their $600 weekly pay from the government (plus perhaps other pay too), all while staying in the comfort and protection of their homes.
This outrages me and puts me and all of the other retail workers and their families and friends in harms' way too. All so that someone can go buy their stupid and nonessential (for the most part) items.
This literally is the same way that teachers, administrators, maint. workers, etc. are being treated 'hey, we love to be exposed to thousands of untested children day in / day out'. Especially when other methods exist (online, etc.) that at least could serve as a temporary measure until the CV epidemic is safely over with. Also, not all have top notch insurance plans, if heaven forbid, the CV happens.
