Its a matter of priorities. Americas priorities are lining the pockets of the already insanely wealthy.

(21,611 posts)for book covers, notebooks, pens and pencils, gym uniforms, too, but also paid for lunch, sports events, and uniforms. Tank suits for the pool were free, but girls bought our own caps for the pool.
School dances and skating parties were free. Clothing was the same.

(16,938 posts)When I was a Principal at the turn of this century I had visited Harvard/Cambridge and bought a poster that I placed on my door:
AFTER WE REBUILD IRAQ - CAN WE REBUILD OUR SCHOOLS?
(Unfortunately, every bit as effective as the poster in the OP. )

There was a time when the USA had the best schools in the world too, with the highest literacy rates and such.

(51,630 posts)Teachers have received little respect in this country. I am sick of being seen as glorified babysitters and a convenience for working parents! I did the math, so did my fellow teachers...we would make more, a lot more, money as an hourly babysitter for each student than as a teacher of 30 kids all day long.

(111,352 posts)to keep them in power, people who went to defunded schools dedicated to producing obedient and patriotic workers, not actually delivering an education. This is not the fault of teachers, who delight in students who are curious enough to go beyond the basics and read something besides the watered down textbook. The fault is systemic, created by a system of chronic underfunding of education and low pay for teachers.
It's just one more indication we are a failed state.
