(1,665 posts)Someone said once that that whether you believe he's trying to destroy the US or not, the question to ask is:
IF he was trying to harm the US, what would he do differently?
I can't think of much...

(34,092 posts)Even if Biden is elected, Trump has squandered the good will we've built up for decades.
Some/many of the changes Trump made may be permanent or semi-permanent. Because we elected Trump, there is no guarantee that we won't elect another idiot in 4 more years. They may well say, "Good riddance," until there are years of evidence that the US is no longer a petulant 2 year old.

(11,495 posts)around 100 million voters didn't bothered to vote in 2016. Many thought trump didn't stand a chance, but no matter why they sat it out, it was a huge mistake, one I don't think will happen this time around.
It was a minority that voted for trump in 2016. The uninformed who fell for his BS put him in office, and we will as a country will suffer for that for years. He has caused a lot of damage here, and around the world. President Bidden will have a lot of work ahead of him, and it will take all of us working together to make sure an idiot like trump NEVER, NEVER, gets elected again.

(34,092 posts)If you look at what is going on in this country honestly - with somewhere between 35 and 40% of voters STILL loyal to trump, increasingly prevalent hate speech, etc., I think the honest answer is "No." That means that if Trump pulls out of an organization, they may not choose to let the US back in, until we can prove that we are once again adults.
It's not a matter of what we need to do - it is a matter of a voluntary association believing that we will actually carry through on our intentions. If Putin were removed from Russia, would the G7 allow Russia in? Not likely - until several years of good behavior and leadershp have been demonstrated. We are now viewed by many countries as being as bad as Russia. Electing Biden will not change that instantaneously.

(11,495 posts)maybe a long time, but we still have to fix the mess here in our country before other countries will trust us, and we haver to do come to together to do that.
As for the 35-40 % numbers, I don't buy this figures. I think it's around 30% who are the diehard loyalists that will never give up on trump, and in coming months that could even go lower.
Nothing is going to happen over night, it will take time.

(53,061 posts)A few years ago I was sitting in a doctors office while accompanying my wife for an appointment. Two men sat across from me and i could tell that they were pharmaceutical reps. One was a researcher with a PhD in vaccine and epidemiological related fields.
I asked him "in the history of homo sapiens which single disease has killed the most humans?"
He thought for a while and said "bubonic plague".
I was not surprised, having asked many people the same question. "No the Black Death had a greater death rate on each of its three outbreaks but probably only killed about 100 million".
"Small Pox killed between 400 and 500 million humans, more than war". He turned red and said "yes of course, we forget about Small Pox because it no longer exists.
It no longer exists because of WHO
1967: The WHO intensified the global smallpox eradication by contributing $2.4 million annually to the effort and adopted a new disease surveillance method.[22][23] The initial problem the WHO team faced was inadequate reporting of smallpox cases. WHO established a network of consultants who assisted countries in setting up surveillance and containment activities.[24] The WHO also helped contain the last European outbreak in Yugoslavia in 1972.[25] After over two decades of fighting smallpox, the WHO declared in 1979 that the disease had been eradicated the first disease in history to be eliminated by human effort.[26
This is what the WHO (under American leadership) accomplished. It can be considered the single greatest achievement of civilization. It required rich developed countries finding ways to cooperate with places like Somalia, Inner China, remote Pakistan and other places without working governments.
Every time it faces a new challenge it has to go through a learning curve and after the fact critics will be able to say that they should have done this or that but that's why learning curves exist, we don't see everything clearly the first time.
The impetus to get this done didn't start in Denmark, Moscow or London. The strategy was created in Atlanta by the CDC. But it needed the WHO to get it done because you needed to get every human community in the world on the same page at the same time. That is what the WHO was able to do.
It is a great organization with great achievements to its credit. The partnership with the CDC and the WHO has had an existential impact on every human being alive today. For thousands of years parents went to sleep at night praying to whatever god they worshiped praying that their children would be spared small pox. Today parents don't even know what it is. Even well educated researchers in the field have begun to forget the most evil terror that affected humans for thousands of years.
