(81,500 posts)Um... as miserable a concept as the idea is, calling it "Pay for Slay" is Fucking BRILLIANT!
It's SOOOOOOOOO catchy!
Catchy things are sticky. They stick in the memory. It's easy to say, or fun to say, or it rhymes, or there's clever alliteration or consonance. If they evoke mental pictures, even better. Make superficiality work for you! Even fits on a bumper sticker!
And then once it has your attention because it's so clever, THEN you start thinking about what it's saying. And the absolute gobsmacking abomination it describes. Hell, even Nixon is probably rolling in his grave, because he did care about moving the country forward, at least in some respects - like setting up the EPA. He did not have a four-plus-year bed-in with Vladimir Putin as trump has. Nixon saw Russia (then the Soviet Union) as neither friend nor ally.
But it's catchy! Which makes it memorable. Which makes it easy to pull up in conversation. And it'll keep that whole horrendous "Bountygate" mortal sin alive and current and continually talked about. You bring that up, then IT brings all of that up. And BINGO! They're reminded of that scandal-of-scandals and disgrace-of-disgrace. Keeps it alive.
I kinda think that there's enough of a group of people on that side of the aisle who like catchy, clever plays-on-words because it makes THEM feel smart or clever, when they, in turn, pass it along to somebody else. It's an ego thing. SOOOO damn much of everything seems to ring their chimes if it's about THEM. How it affects THEM in their own little me-only world. IMO, none of us can afford to think myopia. We HAVE TO think of the larger collective that we are part of. We HAVE TO think bigger, also, regarding what affects us and how we then impact people and environment. How we are ALL affected and how it ALL inter-relates.

(30,613 posts)I was really struggling to come up with a tag simple enough for even a simpleton journalist to use, and "gratuitous" just popped it out there.
I hate "Bounty Gate" because "bounty" is such a lovely positive word (brings up images of baskets of fruit and vegetables and bushels of wheat).
