Washington NFL Team Announces 'Thorough Review' of Name Amid Growing Criticism

Washington's NFL team announced Friday that it is conducting a "thorough review" of its team name following recent discussions with the league.

Team owner Dan Snyder said the following regarding the review: "This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field."

Washington's team name has long been a hot-button issue, but it has been under increased scrutiny in recent weeks because of widespread protests against racial inequality in the United States and around the world.

Snyder will make way more money with a rebrand.

He can sell the old merchandise for way more money than it currently sells for as the old logo becomes a racist collector's item. Then the fans will buy all new jerseys and merchandise with the new logo. He will rake it in like never before.

This has never been about business. It has only been about racism and domination in the name of "tradition".

The name is bad enough. It's not derogatory, but extremely outdated and inappropriate. But the logo is extremely racist.

both Chiefs and Indians are racist names

Native Americans as mascots

never understood why US teams needed added nicknames

we do not have them attached to our football (real football, lolol) teams

like Chelsea is just Chelsea FC (football club)

Manchester United
Manchester City

Borussia Dortmund

AC Milan
Inter Milan

AIK (here in Stockholm) Allmänna Idrottsklubben ie. The Public Sports Club

etc etc etc

33. The Indians originally took the name from a Native American player

The team reportedly sought input from Cleveland baseball writers for a new name entering the 1915 campaign, and the writers turned to readers for suggestions. Indians was selected, in part because of Louis Sockalexis, a Penobscot Indian who played for the Spiders from 1897 to 1899.
“Sockalexis so far outshone his teammates that he naturally came to be regarded as the whole team,” a January 18, 1915, story from the Cleveland Plain Dealer read, per the media guide. “The ‘fans’ throughout the country began to call the Clevelanders the ‘Indians.’ It was an honorable name, and while it stuck the team made an excellent record.

But he is long forgotten and the name is an embarassment now.

a team using a name like Chiefs or Braves. Indians is a little bit worse than that. Redskins is just totally inappropriate at this point in time and should be changed. Cleveland should probably change their name as well. Cleveland Tribe would be an easy swap.

I don't see a problem with using a name that describes a group of people so long as the effort is made to honor that group (which hasn't been the case as often as it should) and some of the proceeds that team makes go to helping said group if they still exist. It's not like you can help support a group of Spartans or Trojans, but there certainly are a lot of native populations who could use some influx of cash into their communities.

Warner Warriors in grade school. Both of course had ridiculous Native American caricature mascots. Both have been changed since the late 70's. Yeah, I'd say it's about time the Washington team changed the name.

Chiefs, Braves, Indians, Warriors will eventually be pushed in that direction. I don’t see how this one team changing their name magically solves that.

Keep their colors. Go with blank helmets or numbers on helmets. Call themselves Washington FC or something like that. Pick a mascot later if they want.

It looks live had logos since 1958. Go back to the 1957 uniform.

this is easily 40-50 years overdue. Redskins is a blatantly pejorative -- blatantly racist term. And there was never any reasonable standing for the other side of the argument. Just simply wasn't. The retention of the name has always been essentially an, "F you -- We don't care -- Whaddaya' gonna do about ..." middle finger salute -- from the time the controversy arose.

Braves, Indians, Chiefs, Seminoles, Illini, Utes .. all have some modicum of neutral designation or intent in their corner (although that will garner argument in some quarter). Redskin clearly doesn't .. and never did. It has always resided in the same category as spics, kikes, wetbacks, chinks, gooks ... Derogatory, pejorative -- and racist -- right down to the ground.
