Supreme Court strikes down Louisiana abortion clinic law

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. joined the court’s liberals in striking down the law, saying it was required by the court’s decision overturning a Texas law in 2016.

“The legal doctrine of stare decisis requires us, absent special circumstances, to treat like cases alike,” Roberts wrote in concurring with the decision. “The Louisiana law imposes a burden on access to abortion just as severe as that imposed by the Texas law, for the same reasons. Therefore Louisiana’s law cannot stand under our precedents.”

I'm no attorney but this reasoning based on stare decisis is important as it should have impact on all future SCOTUS decision. That is the point of stare decisis

It was a 5-4 decision with Chief Justice Roberts joining with the liberals (though not agreeing with their reasoning). I don’t care how he justifies his vote. A win is a win.

that none of the other Justices have over the last year. He actually presided over the trial of Trump in the Senate.

Sure, the others read about it, but they're busy people and only have time for summaries. Roberts sat through every single moment of that trial. It had to focus him on the evil of this presidency.
