Fact check: Wearing a face mask will not cause hypoxia, hypoxemia or hypercapnia

Republicans have suddenly discovered that they actually like the ADA and have been carrying bogus cards saying that they are exempt from wearing a mask due to a disability and it is against the law to requiring them to wear a mask.

Will face masks cause hypoxia?

A reduced oxygen intake level may lead to hypoxemia, a condition where there is low arterial oxygen supply, or hypoxia, a condition where the supply of oxygen in tissue is insufficient. One Facebook post claimed "wearing a mask for an 8 hour shift can reduce your oxygen intake level to a 93 if you have healthy lungs ... it is not healthy to have your oxygen level at that." The post did not specify which type of mask it was referencing.

A healthy oxygen intake level, or the amount of oxygen circulating in your blood, ranges from 95-100%, with anything below 90% considered low, according to Mayo Clinic.

Will a mask give the wearer hypoxia? Simply, no.

"This misinformation may arise from the feeling of lack of air due to mechanical obstruction depending on the type of mouthpiece we are using. But the feeling of obstruction is because we are not used to using the mouth mask. But as such it will not cause us any kind of hypoxia," Dr. Daniel Pahua Díaz, an academic from the Department of Public Health at the National Autonomous University of Mexico medical school, told Animal Político earlier in May.

American Lung Association: From the Frontlines: The Truth About Masks and COVID-19

There is a tremendous amount of disinformation circulating regarding the use of masks to decrease transmission of COVID-19. As with many aspects of the pandemic, mask use has become politicized which is unfortunate when it comes to public health. All science, including public health science, is messy. Recommendations change as evidence becomes available. A new virus with limited data, such as the coronavirus causing COVID-19, adds to the uncertainty.

Initially there was a significant shortage of masks for frontline workers, which was why authorities were reluctant to recommend mask wearing to the general public. It is understandable that people may look back at this old advice and not know what to believe. I think we should trust the public health scientists and realize their recommendations may change as better data becomes available. It took years to fully understand transmission of HIV. People who disregarded emerging recommendations for safe practices in the early days of HIV did not fare as well as those who took precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Do Masks Cause Low Oxygen Levels?
Absolutely not. We wear masks all day long in the hospital. The masks are designed to be breathed through and there is no evidence that low oxygen levels occur. There is some evidence, however, that prolonged use of N-95 masks in patients with preexisting lung disease could cause some build-up of carbon dioxide levels in the body. People with preexisting lung problems should discuss mask wearing concerns with their health care providers. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that mask wearing or physical distancing weakens the immune system.

Excellent shutdowns for anyone claiming breathing problems.

And, btw, the first time I saw this here, I asked what kind of breathing problem she has that lets her yell like that?

But I take issue with the "Do masks cause low oxygen levels? Absolutely not." At hospitals in Dallas nurses and doctors are wearing surgical masks OVER N-95s in order to keep the N-95s relatively clean for re-use, and there have been
credible reports of a CO2 buildup in healthy individuals. I see quite of bit of bullshit in medical reporting lately
even from physicians.
