(4,611 posts)Pence is a joke, but three and a half years of standing next to the orange moron has made him look highly competent in comparison.
Pence would have all of Trump's advantages -- incumbency during a time of national crisis, absolute lockstep support from the GOP, a conservative media alternate reality propaganda machine that now makes North Korea envious, support from Russia, a hardened racist base that is already at death-cult levels of commitment -- and none of Trump's mental and personality flaws.

(4,611 posts)Pence can read a speech, stay on topic, dodge a question without blurting out support for neo-nazis, refrain from retweeting neo-nazis, and converse with a fake but mildly believable charm.
Sure, 30 years ago this was considered the minimum requirementsfor a Republican to run for dogcatcher, but now compared to Trump, it makes Pence look like somewhere between Churchill and Cicero.
Don't pretend the bar for GOP candidates hasn't been lowered to the center of the earth.

(4,611 posts)There are more than a few people out there who who want to vote GOP but can't bring themselves to because of Trump.
The Lincoln Project would be running ads against Biden right now if Rubio had gotten elected.

(1,328 posts)If trump bails, which has started poking like a possibility, I can see Mitt Romney emerging as the Republican candidate. Even if Pence gets to serve as President for a while, his succession as the Republican candidate is not assured. The Republican national nominating convention is still in the future. At that convention Republicans could look at their general election prospects and choose a radical new path.
Pence, after all, is covered in the stink of Donald Trump. He has visibly failed at leadership as corona virus czar, he admits he was either incompetently or traitorously out of the loop on the Russian bounty-for-US-servicemens lives, and hes got tons of other scoobies that Dems can and will key in on if he is the Republican candidate.
Mittens, on the other hand, voted for impeachment, and has marched with Back Lives Matter. Hes rich, handsome, and moderate. The banker and oligarch class love him. He could take a big chunk of Republican-no-matter-what voters as well as on-the-fence independents with him. In short, potentially a viable, even formidable candidate.
I think that our side needs to be thinking about Mitt and how to defeat him if he emerges as the Republican candidate. I even worry that if he does become the candidate, Bidens handlers will urge him to move to the middle and away from the progressive policy promises we need to energize our base. After all, with Trump out of the picture, lots of folks will figure that the threat to the country is much less dire than it was. Which may prompt a rethinking of who moderate and independent Republicans and Democrats alike will vote for.
