Face Masks = Work.
The rest is a distraction.
The hair dressers in Missouri cut 180 people's hair while infected, and no one got the virus.
Because they HAD TO WEAR FACE MASKS.
It isn't rocket surgery.
It sucks, but I wear a face mask whenever I am within 6 feet of non family members. I haven't infected anyone I am sure. I wish the rest could say that. If they could, the virus would be GONE by now.
It's not rocket surgery.

(58,785 posts)but I was a little startled. It'd definitely make me cringe to realize I left home without a mask, even first offense. (New ones always in my purse and in both vehicles).
As for throwing people in jail, that works so well for casual pot smokers and people driving while black, doesn't it? No to jailing people for punitive satisfaction. We're not damned Republicans, after all. It has to be for a genuinely constructive purpose when lesser actions fail -- like identified superspreaders found breaking mandated quarantine.

(58,785 posts)100,000 Hispanics in detention camps in the desert, those particular areas of dirt are vacant, so maybe they could be shipped there. Perhaps we could sell it to Trump as a captive audience of the size he's always dreamed of.
But still, let's see how fines do first.

we are part of Texas and a part from Texas...we don't think Hispanic...we think friends, neighbors, teachers, doctors, lawyers, husbands, wives, children, grandchildren...I see desperate families coming from Mexico everyday...covid 19 doesn't discriminate...yes I know the black and hispanic communities have been hit the hardest..however, my retired military next door neighbor is in a hospital bed sucking air through a ventilator...he's white...my friend's 92 year old father contracted covid from a care giver and he died three days after becoming symptomatic..he was black...his 88 year old wife is dying in a nursing home because of covid...she's asian American...this plague doesn't give a damn about skin color or ethniticity ...and the morons who refuse to wear masks are "killing" us indiscriminately..mind-boggling fines the first offense...jail the next...

(58,785 posts)recognize any of the differences some think are so meaningful.
I was in El Paso once. Had the day to kill, Constitution Day in Mexico, so I left my car behind and walked over into Juarez. Taxi drivers wanted to take me to mostly deserted tourist spots instead of the festival areas, so I ditched them and later walked back to the border when it was getting dark. Wouldn't do that today.
We lived in SoCal and often visited and vacationed down there. I could even stumble along in Spanish in those days. Always thought I'd get fluent, but over years of lack of compelling need and disuse it slipped away. Plenty of Spanish speakers around, but you can't try the patience of even good friends until you get significantly better than I was.
Stay well.

(65,227 posts)Put people in jail, courts will rule it excessive.
$500 dollar fine for endangering public safety would be hard for courts to see as excessive.
Oh, and $1,000 for each subsequent violation.
People's attitude will change in a hurry.

(58,785 posts)over a $500 fine. (Pretending exposure wouldn't be a problem.) I have a lot more free time than money to throw around, and $500 would buy a number of things I'd much rather spend it on.
And I've never been to jail, so it'd be something different. Come to think of it, these days too many bored people might prefer a little paid reality tour to their local jail.

(12,712 posts)Well, I don't see them addressing the sheer, Marxist tyranny of wearing seat belts, stopping at red lights, or driving on only one side of the road. Their specious arguments easily lose ground if challenged appropriately.
Freedom is contextual, consensual and reciprocal in a society. It is contextual as per the crisis we all face and are subject to.
It is consensual in that we have certain understandings and agreements about our obligations in relation to the many variables and particulars surrounding it. It is reciprocal in the sense that our responsibility to act is in direct proportion to how our actions both respect and consider the freedom and well being of our fellow citizens just as we would expect for ourselves.
Without understanding the importance of that civic duty to understand that relationship, the result is tyranny for an individual or a group since they demand their own freedoms regardless of the impact or outcome of their suppositions in general.
In that case, that kind of view and behavior resembles an emotional and intellectual immaturity that resembles an adolescent mindset which many of us grow out of eventually and are able to take on the complexities and obligations of our shared liberty and corresponding obligations.
Ranting away like we see, without any substantial evidence or reason and logic, is another sign of that obviously arrested development that is being displayed.
So, "grow up" might sound condescending or stodgy these days, but that does encapsulate much of the problem, or at least, an important aspect of it.
Also, this can be done with a modicum of intelligence that most people do possess even though many do not develop or exercise that capacity and that's a matter of neglect, apathy and a preference for distractions and entertainments.

(58,785 posts)access the internet and most cable and TV would be down or showed new talking heads who made Fox look like MSNBC in comparison.
You'd know if his people were displeased with doings in your area if the water and power were cut off, the military blocking all routes out, and residents informed anyone stepping outside would be shot on sight. Eventually you'd hear announcements and rumors that our political leaders and major media figures were in prison or had disappeared.
I think we can assume Trump's power is not absolute.

(1,789 posts)Most people don't run red lights. Whether it's fear of a ticket, public safety or their own, the result is the number of red light runners is small enough for the cops to handle. What we have now is a huge percentage of the population listening to an idiot, and the idiot resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. If he says stopping at red lights is for wimps, good luck driving. That might even be safer than the danger being unleashed now.

If the fierce glares of fellow shoppers don't deter anti-maskers then the bouncers wearing security uniforms will.
"No Mask, No Sale. Leave your cart where it is, we'll show you to the exit."
I did see an exception made at Target. It was an elderly woman who was possibly a little demented because she kept pulling down her mask and talking to no one in particular like it was shopping with imaginary friends day.
Maybe store staff knew her. There's an assisted living apartment complex down the street.
I live in Democratic California.
I know people who live in Trump California who tell me many people there are not wearing masks and many businesses are not enforcing mask rules. Parts of California are as Republican as Oklahoma and Arizona and the infection rates will reflect that.
There's also a small number of people who will rely upon herbs, incense, and crystals to protect themselves, but they are far outnumbered by the Free Dumb Party Trump Republicans.
