From Notre Dame:
Pete Buttigieg, former South Bend mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has been named a 2020-2021 faculty fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS).
The NDIAS is a University-wide research institute that convenes an interdisciplinary group of faculty, graduate and undergraduate fellows each year to study questions that require a joint focus, benefit from sustained research and advance understanding of pressing issues that affect our ability to lead valuable, meaningful lives.
Buttigieg (a Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar) will work on two research projects at the NDIAS: one that explores how to restore trust in political institutions and another that considers the forces distinctively shaping the 2020s. He joins a group of more than 30 faculty and student fellows who will be conducting research on the nature of trust, the institutes 2020-2021 research theme.
As an NDIAS faculty fellow, Buttigieg will join the NDIAS fellows and students in weekly work-in-progress seminars and other academic programming. He will also engage the broader campus community by teaching an interdisciplinary undergraduate course on the importance of trust as understood through different fields. The seminar draws on literature, politics, economics and philosophy and students will have the opportunity to engage with other guest experts.
Im thrilled to welcome Pete to the institute and Notre Dame in the coming year. More than ever, we need scholars and public leaders working together, generating the insights that will make democratic institutions stronger and advance the common good in creative and evidence-based ways, said Meghan Sullivan, director of the NDIAS and the John A. OBrien Professor of Philosophy. We are eager to support Pete as he pursues his ambitious research projects. He is a perfect fit for our world-class Nature of Trust cohort. Were expecting some really exciting ideas from this group.

(20,631 posts)the option of doing this on a part-time basis in the not-too-distant future, if you catch my drift.

(2,947 posts)happened with that?? IMO there is too much work that has to be done to restore the country and he'll not be effective in the Administration if he'd only be part time.

(31,261 posts)on for ideas. There are others in the wing that can take his place. He is in a good spot, the academic world, generating societal shaping research and ideas.

(31,261 posts)Plus, the job that he is getting likely pays a lot more than he would make in Washington, and he gets to sleep in his bed every night.

(16,493 posts)Hes got to make a living. And Im sure if hes asked by Biden to be in the admin hell leave the teaching gig. In either case Im not seeing a reason for your irritation that Joe Biden hasnt given Pete an administration job 4 months before an election and 7 months before a Biden admin would begin.

Is Pete the first openly gay person to teach at Notre Dame? I doubt there have been many.

(34,195 posts)My first thought was "No"
but then I remembered Notre Dame is a Catholic institution and 'the church' is not real 'gay friendly'.
BGBD
(3,282 posts)sure Notre Dame was still officially associated with the Catholic Church, and they are.
I dug a little deeper and apparently the answer is No.

I wonder how much this shift had to do with availability of federal fund through student loans.

But hey, go for it, Pete! Gotta wish you well!

(52,169 posts)Many teachers at Catholic high schools have been fired for marrying same sex partners. At least one in Indiana that became national news. I find it interesting that policy doesn't apply to universities.

(61,700 posts)I was interested in some research on the meaning of oaths and oath-taking recently. It seems appropriate given how trump routinely violates his oath of office. Donald trump, the oaf of office.
