This is very concerning for all of us! 40 million people are unemployed.
Should the US Government extend unemployment benefits and the $600 bonus for the unemployed?

(32,017 posts)30% of Americans (thats 99 million Americans) could not make their entire rent/mortgage payments in June. Were looking at a revolution if 99 million Americans become homeless this year. Congress has to act.

(11,949 posts)Floridas $275 a week is not enough to even pay the bills. And no one will hire me because I cant promise not to leave when and if my company calls me back.
And Nancy getting them to make unemployment $15 an hour equal was brilliant. Millions of Americans have had a taste of what not living in abject poverty feels like. They are not going to be happy going back to $10 an hour wages. I hope unions are getting ready to organize like hell.

(8,843 posts)establishing a permanent livable guaranteed federal income is a good thing and there is no time like the present.
In the cases of catastrophe (war, pandemic, et al), there would not be the economic disruption we now endure (and that will get worse).
Such payments would not be socialism but rather can be phrased as well-regulated and stabilized capitalism.

(11,949 posts)My wife has been called back to work. I hope to be soon. Giving us extra money when both in our pretty high paying jobs would not be a good use of federal money. We would just use it for international trips.
But for those out of work poverty should not be the result.

(8,843 posts)We have moved into a post-full employment economy.
The distribution of income and wealth has become so skewed that our capitalism has become unjust and unstable.
Don't think many international trips are in the plans of most Americans in the immediate future.
Maybe if too much income you should pay more taxes?
One would think a functional thriving society able to withstand down periods is a worthy national goal.

(65,180 posts)Its for all so it works the best. I would do something like Yangs amount while retaining more safety net services than he does. That way, it wouldnt crush spending on everything else and we can tax the rich more and reduce defense spending. Warrens wealth tax is another idea.

(11,949 posts)We had pretty much full employment until the pandemic. What we did not have is regulation on capitalism to insure everyone reaped the benefit of it. We allow the rich to pay the poor a pittance of the wealth they help generate. In mind that is easier to fix than trying to gin up support for a UBI.
But honorable people can disagree.
Have a nice day.

(65,180 posts)It is absolutely necessary to prevent further collapse, IMO.
We also should do at least a second stimulus (I prefer more), expansion of sick leave, improvements to health care, more money to states, and mortgage and rent relief should be extended indefinitely.
